I've got a 92 with a 3vze, 82k miles, auto, 4wd.

Some mornings on cold days ill get a tapping or ticking sound. Oil level is fine. It didn't do it until I put synthetic in it. I switched back to castrol high mileage 10/30.

It'll do it for up to a minute some days.

Help me out please sirs.

Thanks!

I've had a ticking in my 93 4Runner's engine from the day I bought it in 2003. At first I was worried it was something major, but after all these years, and a lot of searching - it's normal for this engine.

Maybe one of the 4Runner gurus can answer your question.

Why are you running high mileage oil if you don't mind me asking? That stuff has additives that swell up seals and whatnot which can cause problems if you switch to anything besides "high mileage" oil.

tapping

hay check out your fuel pressure regulator.there some times very loud its on driver side on fuel rail .mine is kinda loud sometimes.
3vze

Watch that video above, it's not a constant tick which leads me to believe I've got an issue that is going to get worse. It's like one of the front bearings isn't getting the lubrication pickup it needs when first started. Oil pressure is fine though.

- First, 10w-30 weight is too light an oil for the 3VZE(V6), synthetic or dino oil. You might consider using 10w-40.
- Second, it worth discerning where the noise is coming from after the proper, or factory recommended weight oil is installed. It's probably just a lifter, getting a tad lazy or clogged with sludge. You might consider running a quart of ATF in your oil during your next oil change interval. This will clean out the internals to get rid of any "sticky lifter" situation.
Make sure the ticking is not coming from any other area in the truck(exhaust, driveline, axles, etc..).

Don't sweat the ATF, that has been used by shops for decades. ATF was always very handy in VW lifters since the 70's. Sea Foam is pretty hostile stuff. As far as zmax is concerned, probably does not need a lubricant as much as a bit of detergent(ie ATF) if it is a lifter making the noise.
Synthetic will do a fair bit of cleaning, but nothing like ATF. If your concerned, you can always run M1 syn ATF, brilliant stuff. Worked miracles on the trans in our BMW. It takes a bit to work in on the lifters though, ie run it for a 2-3k. Personally, I like it because it is not so harsh like many cleaners(sea foam, etc..) out there.

the 3.0 doesnt have hyd. lifters so atf wont help the valve train if it is a valve train tick you will check the valve clearance and reshim as needed since it is a mechanical head

Yes, it does under the shim. If you don't believe me, look up the part any most web sites( rockauto, autohausaz, napa, etc..). VW ran a similar set up. They might need to have the valves adjusted and and have the timing set, but I'd start with rudimentary basics first. The dealer(if they'll even touch it) will charge him an arm and leg to do the adjustment.

I have my engine out and completely apart right now. There are no hydraulic lifters in a 3VZe... Just hollow shim buckets called "valve lifters" over the valve springs.

Look here for yourself...

thanks i didnt want to argue and i have a set of heads apart on my bench and had the parts in my hand.i think alot of problems with high mile 3.0 is nobody takes the time to set the valves

10-30 is not too light... the factory oil and suggested weight is 5-30 so I doubt 10-30 is the problem.// heavier oil can actually cause a ticking as well... Have you checked your timing? too far advanced can cause a ticking sound... with only 80k though I would think it just might be the fuel pressure regulator as mentioned before.
I would be more apt to try small increments of timing adjustment to see if the sound gets noisier or quieter... all the 3vz i have had or seen do have a small bit of ticking from the OHC being right top it is easier to hear... IMO

Z max did more damage than good to my 4.3 blazer, I put my trust in Hyper-Lube or Lucas myself....
as far as the sea foam goes I am a big believer in its capabilities... if it is a dirty valve or injector a bit in the tank and a bit in the CC helps.... every 10k or so I will take a spray paint can lid and fill it with sea foam, pull the PCV hose from the intake and put another loose hose on the intake vac port and SLOWLY suck up the sea foam out of the lid... just slow enough that the engine doesnt die.. after it is all gone shut it down and let it sit for about half an hour.. hook the vac from PCV back up and RUN THE PISS OUT OF IT until it stops smoking.(dont be discouraged by the amount of smoke cause it will fog up your road..lol... ).. should take about 2 or 3 minutes (if that) for the smoke to stop.. that smoke is all carbon build up from your intake and such being cleaned out and burned away from the intake and out the exhaust..... ... it woke up my 3vz-e enough that I noticed the difference in performance.... but then mine has 240k on it.
I run 5-30 syn blend and have not had ANY problems with that light of an oil.
JUST MY 2 CENTS..... I use 4.5q of syn blend and a half a q of Hyper-Lube or Lucas at every oil change
