Still working on my head gasket replacement on my old '95. I'm to the buttoning it up stages. I got a new timing belt kit and put it on today. It's a DNJ kit so the belt doesn't have the timing marks on it like the oem ones. I got the crank dots lined up on the bottom, crank pulley is at 0*. The right cam is lined up perfectly but the left cam seems to be a hair off of the lines lining up. It's maybe the thickness of the little line off. I took a pic but it doesn't really show well what I'm seeing. If I was to try to turn the cam back a tooth on the belt then it'd be way off. With everything else lining up fine and this being maybe 1mm off am I overthinking this? I rotated the engine manually a few times and it comes right back to this.
Did this a month or so ago and I don't think I got it any closer. For what it's worth I bought an OEM belt at the dealership (yes, I've learned a LOT since then) and the Toyota belt had no timing marks on it. I had to rely on the marks I made on the old belt with a silver sharpie.
My son's 3VZE had the old style tensioner but the same cam sprockets and idler pulley as the 95 and I had 47 cog spaces counted from the timing mark on one gear to the timing mark on the other gear. The crank was set to the zero mark on the oil pump.
Hope this helps,
