4.10 with elocker

a local guy is selling rear axle, drum to drum, 4.10 gear ratio with elocker for $700. Is there any way to test whether elocker is functional? Also, how do I ensure axle/housing is not bent?

You can test the locker motor by wiring it and "jumping" it to run when you want it to. Here's a good diagram to follow: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/85197-ripcords-2002-4runner-sport-ed-48.html#post1199778

You don't need to connect the indicator switch, but instead just the 5 wires off the motor itself. I did it by sticking jumper wires (small wires - google) into the connector on the motor and then hooking those up as the diagram shows. I didn't run it long as the wires were so tiny and I didn't want to melt anything.

Seems a bit steep.. The housing itself is worth maybe $80, diff is worth around $400 and the drum assemblies are not worth much. Maybe $40 a piece, less if they have any evidence of past oil leaking. You can get these drum assemblies for bout that much from a scrap yard anyways.

With that said, you can Google "bench test elocker" and you'll get a bunch of results on how to's. Can't really assure the axle straightness unless you get it professionally inspected for it, which I don't know who even does that anymore.

BTW, are you sure it has 4.10's? IIRC, all elockers for the 4Runner had 4.30s. Might want to verify that, as having two different gear ratios are not good.

This thread is awesome. Only locals have responded so far. Let's see who will ruin that for us.

As far as I know only Tacos came with 4.10 e-lockers & they have leaf springs. Not a direct swap. I would double check that.

4.10 elockers came in 5 speed 4Runners. 4.30 elockers came in automatics. $700 isn't too bad, but it isn't a great price either. I'd pay that if a clean one came up near me though this way you don't have to piece things together.

$700 isn't bad. E-Locker goes for $400-$450 by itself and you dont have to modify your non e-locker housing.
I paid $500 for drum to drum w/harness & dash switch. I had a 24hr round trip to get mine so gas, food & a hotel was probably around $700 or more. I had to drive south to get one that was rust free from Virginia.

I have a 4.10 locker that came from the scrapyard on a 4Runner. I'm about to sell the 3rd because there's a guy with a 4.88 locked that's parting his truck out here. Anyways I think what unner said. They only came with the manuals.

he's right. only taco's came w/ 4.10s. look at the housing, it may not have coil spring holders on it. If it does, it's 99.99999% 4.30.

I searched high and low, but ended up buying housing and diff from a tack separately.

I bought a bent housing once (damn bastard who sold it to me), easiest way is visually inspect the housing against something straight like a ruler or anything straight.

I was wrong as the 2 gentleman above us said. SR5 5-Speed's came with 4.10. It's as rare as a 3RZ with a locker, most lockers came on Limited's w/ 4.30.

Hmm, it seems up here housings are worth $795...

That guy is on drugs. To piece together a complete e-locker axle using his parts would run you $4-5000 and he actually expects people to pay that, he got offended when I asked if he could come close to the price I could get on a complete axle.

About normal price around here WITH the locker. Usually $7-800.

I'll ship you a rust free southern axle housing for the low price of only $700 :)

I got a 4.3 complete with e-locker in Oregon for $500, then another one up here for $350 CDN which is about $250 US. Both are in decent shape but have some surface rust and will need to be painted. Haven't checked the functioning of the e-lockers yet but have no reason to believe they wouldn't work.

Restored like that I see go for $300. Best bet is to find someone parting out a locked 4R. I looked & waited for over 2 years to get mine.

I am seeing the seller tomorrow to inspect the housing and elocker. I will take pictures and post them here tomorrow. He told me he has 15 to choose from.
