4.56 Gear Users Here?

I may not have much to add for the OP because I am a 5speed and SC'd and on 35's. I have 4.88 and I really did a lot of debate before I chose them. As my daily driver I wish I had gone 4.56's or just stayed with the 4.10's since now I am about to be dual cased. On Road trips I cruise at 75 (gps) and my rpms are at 3200-3300. I would rather be closer to 2600-2800. It might not really matter and I don't know that it would change my milage that much just really personal preference. I am getting very similar gas milage to when I had 4.10's and 35's. Just my 2 cents.

also I am light compared to many. no bumpers (about to fix that) no skids. but do have sliders.

So correct me if I’m wrong, the consensus seems to be with an auto 4.56 or 4.88 if you hit the highway and take it Offroad. 5.29s are good around town and wheeling?

I went with 4.88 on my auto and running the 255/85 km2 and it feels great around town and on the highway. Your tire size you plan on running should help you decide what ratio you should be running. How much weight you are carrying around? Are you looking for better gas mileage? What type of driving are you doing mostly. Its not as cut and dry as 4.56 and 4.88 for highway and 5.29 for around town. Changing gear ratios is expensive and you want to make sure you are changing them for the right reasons. If you are considering a locker, this would be the time to decide.

So I drive my 4Runner a lot daily, because until you delete a diesel, the epa parts aren’t so friendly in town. I use it to get to a lot of my hunting and fishing spots, fully armored, skids are in the future along with a winch and synthetic rope. I just want to be able to get up to speed without running 1 million RPMs(said with a Dr Evil voice), and not be so gutless on the trails. I’m getting 14-16 MPG if I’m lucky. I know when I drive it, it’s not a Prius. So I just want good all around performance. I wish I could supercharge it, but that’s a disaster waiting to happen at 267k.

Have you thought about what tire size you are going to be running? If you have a lot of weight, 4.88's might work better. I was suprised how little the difference was with my gears. Personally im glad that i didnt go with the 4.56. I think i would have been really disappointed. The supercharger added I noticed more of a difference though. Im getting about the same mpg(14-16mpg) and I dont have a heavy foot at all. The km2 tires really killed the mpg and they are heavy. Gears and supercharger were just so i could maintain long steep hills or going through a head wind on the highway on long camping trips. Was always searching gears trying to maintain 65+ on the highway. Not anymore, can go 75+ if i want, im satisfied with the setup. Its not unheard of to run a super charger on a higher mileage runner. These stock pulleys arent running a lot of psi.

I have considered the 4.88s. I am staying at a 265/75/16, so I am right in the 32/33 ballpark. I have basically all the armor, but if it doesn't sell, I want to make the 4Runner more driving friendly. Basic requirements are to be able to cruise at 75 at a reasonable RPM, and be able to pull itself through the obstacles under its own power.

Thats a tough call. 255/85 km2 are almost a 34 if i call correctly. You will be pulling some high rpms on the highway with 265/75. Ill have to verify, but i think at 74 on my gps im turning 2750 rpm. Personally i wouldnt put in 4.88 with 265/75. 4.56 may not justify the price with the little difference it may bring. Perhaps others can chime in on their 4.88 or 4.56 with those size tires. Gears are so damn expensive to install.

Edit: also regearing didnt help much at all with better gas mileage. Was hoping to gain a couple mpg back but it seemed marginal at best.

I'm weighing this right now myself - 5spd, going to be dual cased, thinking about 35s. Not sure if I should regear to 4.88; SC it; or both? I was leaning towards just the SC..

Has your opinion on this changed at all, Rockdawg84?

I'm intrigued by the guys who have re-geared for 33's in this thread (unless I'm reading or understanding this all wrong...). I have been drooling over gears for a long time, a lot because I want lockers but also because I feel woefully under-powered for my likes with 285's and 4.56's and a 4 cylinder. I'm a little surprised to hear 5.29s with 33's mentioned here, since I was wondering if I was insane for thinking that, especially if v6 guys are thinking it.

Honestly the 4.56, 4 cyl, 5 Speed, 285 combo is pretty livable until you get her loaded down pretty heavy, even does ok on gas, 22-24 mpg ( No load, lightweight armor)

eimkeith My opinion has not changed, if I had it to do over again Im not sure I would change at all. Supercharger, 35's and 4:10's especially around town it totally fine. I drove that way for a while and when I decided to drop the money on ARB's front and rear I went all out and did gears because 4:10 off road were a little rough with the 5 speed out here in the rocks. I had always said that I wasn't going to dual case this Runner because it is my daily driver. There are times when I am woefully not self aware and should have realized that dual cases were inevitable. I have made several trips over 1000 miles on the 4:88 and really it probably is more psychological than anything but at 80 mph I am running 3300 rpm. The engine doesn't struggle or run hot or even complain, I would just feel more comfortable at 2700 like my stock 2000 5speed does.

wow that was a ramble. I am not disappointed I have 4:88's but for freeway cruising 4:56 or even 4:37's would be preferable, "for me". So for me it simply is making the decision to go 37's an easier self argument to make. Oh and the wife as well. LOL

I hope some of that was helpful. the other thing to keep in mind is that for the most part AZ is fairly flat where I do most of my driving. If I lived in CO or say Northern CA or even Northern AZ it might be different.

So in my case, if it were you, you'd stay 4.10 with a SC, 35s and dual cases, at least initially - correct?

yes that is the order I would go. The beauty is that if you don't like it then you can calculate what you want to go to gear wise.

I know this thread is about 4.56 gears, but does anyone know if there was a set of 4.38 gears in a 8” Toyota 3rd member? I have an opportunity to go from the 4.10s, but I thought Toyota used a 4.30, not 4.38. I’d have to rebuild the 3rd members, but don’t know if it’s worth it. Thoughts?

I believe you are correct 4:30 is the ratio. As far as if it is worth it, well I would say that it depends on what has to be done to rebuild them. If it is a simple bearing swap then maybe but I would bet that if they have bearings out there will be a strange wear pattern on the gears and they probably should be replaced. And do you plan to do the work yourself? if not added expense in rebuild and do you want to pay that and then run used gears? If they are free to you then grab them for sure and then you have them to do with what you want. Let us know what you end up doing.
