4.56 Gear Users Here?

Thinking about going from 4.10's to 4.56's so the 4Runner isn't so lethargic when towing or full of weight (plus planning to go to 275/65/16's). Or maybe 4.30's if anyone can sway me with their recommendations/experience.

Anyone here running 4.56 gears? Any experience/success stories to share (wish you went with 4.30's or 4.88's, etc.)?

4.56's are like the bas**** step child.. no one really cares for them.

If you're not planning to go with bigger tires (285's and above) and have heavy additions then I wouldn't really worry about 4.56's or even anything lower.

Yes, there are some instances where having 4.56 might fit ones application. Maybe with your rig it might fit better since you only want slightly above stock height tires and want the extra power for towing. BUT, if I were you I would just go with some 4.30s. It may be even cheaper in the long run cus you can find a full front diff, and rear 3rd already set with 4.30's and just swap them in.

There are few here that have or have had 4.56's. I'm sure one of them will chime in. Most will tell you they wish they just would have gone with 4.88s. Then again, most probably have bigger tires and heavy upgrades like bumpers, skids, etc etc

Yeah, I did the 4.56 because I didn't plan going more than a 32" tire. I want 33"s now :(
 
Good feedback. I do plan to snag an ARB bumper at some point, would toting that extra weight around still be good with 4.30's or should I still think about 4.56's?
 
I run 285's, arb, sliders, skid, and 4.30 seem to work great for me. Then again, I don't tow or have many hills to worry about. I do plan on moving to 4.88s when I get the money for it and a front arb locker at the same time (ecgs). If I were you, i would just get 4.30s. Doesn't seem like your pushing your rig to do the things you would want 4.56's or 4.88s for.

Regearing from 4.10s to 4.30s is a bad idea. If somebody already has 4.30s, that's fine it's probably not worth regearing for 33s and under. But coming from 4.10s and paying to go to 4.30s, you will really be disappointed when you barely feel a difference for your $1000+. Also, I don't know if many aftermarket companies make 4.30 gears - not a real common ratio in the offroad world (unless you get Toyota OEM gears).

Honestly, I feel the same way about regearing to 4.56s on an automatic. I think it's not a big enough difference for all that money. 4.88s or don't bother regearing at all is what I say! I have 4.88s and auto and I would get 5.29s if I did it again. Even if you don't have big tires and armor now, if you're like the vast majority of others on here, 33s will come soon.

Brian2Sun - What kind of revs are you turning at 60 and 70 mph?

Does toyota make speedo gears for 4.88's? One of the reasons I was going with toyota gears is so that I wouldn't have to fool around with rigging the speedo.

Good Point Brian2sun! I was wondering which R&P set did you get and why? I'm looking to regearing 4.88's and I want to know where can I get them installed for a good price in so cal?

I'm not sure about the speedo gears, my speedo just reads slow. I know people have got their speedo to read correctly even with 5.29s, but I'd have to research how they did it. It just wasn't a big concern for me. Regearing costs so much, choosing the correct ratio to give you the power increase you want is the important thing. I would worry about recalibrating the speedo later.

YotaMasters in Corona is a good shop that specializes in Toyota gear setups. STAY AWAY FROM 4WHEELPARTS!! It took them 4 tries to get my front locker installed correctly!

I have Motive gears because the price was good and they are good quality. Yukon, Precision, Richmond, Genuine, and Superior are some others. Really, the setup is much more important than what brand gears you get. A bad setup with good gears is much worse than a good setup with cheaper gears.

I emailed them last week about re-gearing and Diff set up costs. Its cheaper to just buy from East Coast Gear Supply. You can get an Open front diff with 5.29 for $600 and the rear was $575. Then there is return shipping of your old diffs back. but its not much.


from yota masters it was Front $325 labor +$200 gears+$210 for install kit = $735
the rear was $220 labor + $200 gears + 210 install kit = $630

and that was if i took the diffs out and brought them in. A little steep, if you ask me. I know what goes into diff set ups... I just asked because i was contemplating being lazy and having a shop install my gears when I re gear. NVM that

I would second Brians advice, I have drove his truck with 4.88s They are not all that much different. I would only go 5.29s, But I think 4.88's would be good if you are for sure going to stay under 285's/33s.

"Have drove" Lol. Yeah, my auto w/ 4.88s wasn't a big power difference from Jason's 5 spd w/ 4.10s. Going from 4.10s to 4.88s on my auto was a noticeable difference though. After comparing our trucks' power, I would say a manual with 4.56s = about the same power as an auto with 4.88s. Especially since my engine wasn't rebuilt yet when we did our test drives... it doesn't feel like a 65 year old lady doing the insanity workout now, haha.

What's your experience with the 4.10's and 5spd? I want 33's but I'm not going to regear right away, so I don't know how I feel about the power loss.
 
Some hill's that I used to go up in third I now have to down shift to second for a little bit but it's not really a big deal. I like having the bigger tires. But I've found some 4.56's in my area so I'm wondering if I should jump on this opportunity or not.
 
I've been wondering the same thing. I'm getting 285/75/16 and was gunna re gear to 4.56. The only thing holding me back from the 4.88s or higher is that I've heard your Rpms are significantly higher at higher speeds? And I drive on the highway quite a bit.
 
The beauty of 4.56 is that it was a factory option (auto 4cylinder I think) so with some careful watching you should be able to pick up a set f/r for cheap
