4.56 gears and 35's ok combo?

so everwhere i read everyone seems to have different opinions. i have a 1993 4runner v6 5sp with 4.56 gears and 33in tires and no lift. im thinking of being cheap (cause i dont plan to have this truck for long) and doing a 2-3 inch body lift to clear 35's. as of now 33's and 4.56's feel like a good combo, i do alot of city driving but will be doing alot of highway from vancouver to whistler. any opinion/comment is a good one! thanks

35s and 4.56 can work, but will suck on the highway. You'll need 4lo for almost anything offroad.

Stick with 33's and 4.56 or regear to 4.88 for 35's.

The general matches, what makes the speedo read nearly normal and makes it accelerate as if it was stock, is 35's/5.29, 33's/4.88, 31's/4.56. Obviously there can be some variance, such as between auto and manual tranny, but these are tried and true combos that make the truck drive like factory. I had 35's with 5.29's and even the mileage stayed similar to stock, let alone the acceleration.

33s and 4.56s will work BUT in a gen 2 4runner it wont be super duper friendly lol..
I personally like 33s and 4.88s in my 4runner. If you had a pickup v6 5spd the 4.56s wouls work better imo..thats just me tho, im in hawaii also so I dont have long drives going 70+mph I stay 50-60 and mostly 35mph

You can make it work and probably wont be tgat dissapointed with it if your not keeping the truck long... But theres the snag... Nearly everyone that dosent "keep their 4runner long" ends up being the poor guy I see drooling on my ugly runner at the trail head, with their "damn, I shoulda never got rid of it" story.. My suggestion is; any upgrade you do, do so in the idea that your keeping it. So your not that guy! Lol

yes but i bought this truck fully knowing i wasnt going to keep it long. got it for about 1500$ up in canada. i take it out in the bush every weekend pretty much, and then daily drive it every week since my rhd integra will not last in the winter. worst case ontario i re gear later on. i bought it for the purpose of having a vehicle that i could not give 2 ****s about. as long as it gets me from a-b

this one is just to get through the winter, il get a nicer one (preferably 1st gen) for the summer. i want to drive down to cali and pick up and 85

so far ive had four 2nd gen 4runners. granted one i bought as a parts truck. i love them!

Works great for me, highway and offroad at 6000ft above sea level.

ehh... it's slow. it is what it is. made the swap from a fast, unreliable car to this. lol.

33's and 4.56's work great for me. It's my current setup. I live in a city with a lot of hills and lights and I do just fine. I get the average 16mpg too

It's not the ideal ratio, but it will do.
Not much different than 33's and 4.10 gears that people run all the time.

So If it's not that different then 33's and 4:10, then wouldn't 35's and 4.56 be managble? Or is that what you meant by "not ideal but will do" and I'm just blabbering like an idiot now...

And I was told by someone on bc 4runners that 35's, stock suspension and a 3inch body lift would kill my front diff and cv joints. If this is true then I will most likely just purchase a locker. Or weld my diff at the shop

Yes, that's what I meant.

And yes, if you do much offroading, you'll end up destroying CV joints with 35's.
That's a bit big for IFS.

Agree with both of you.
4.56 here with a 5spd and 33's. does OK. But would love to have 4.88's to go with my 33's. driving up to big bear slows my runner down an have to stay in 3rd gear as i am getting passed by geo metros hahaha
Does fine for city driving and flat highway trips
