4.7 Timing belt at dealer

I picked up this '07 and as far as I can tell, the Timing belt has not been replaced. It has a 180K miles on it. I checked Toyota registry and there's no sticker anywhere on the engine, or mention on the carfax.

I just replaced all the brakes Saturday so not looking forward to another long day of wrenching on my weekend.

Local toyota dealer quoted me $930 with water pump (plus tax), so roughly about $1K. He said book time is 5.7 hours @ $129 = $735. Looks like he is charging $200 for parts which seems to be going rate on line.

Does anyone know if the dealer includes changing the idlers and all the other stuff with them? $700 to drop the car off and pick it up sounds pretty good vs blowing another weekend that I don't have on maintenance. I called an independent shop and they were the same price. Is this in line with what everyone else is paying?

Fair price. That's pretty much the going rate around here too

That is what i paid for timing belt and water pump at the dealership. They did throw in a free loaner for the day

Damn. My dealer quoted me $1200. I wish I could have dealer do it for sub $1000.

Im still shopping around and haven't done it yet and I definitely dont want to waste a weekend doing it myself like OP stated. Thanks for the post now I now I could get it done much cheaper at dealer.

Can’t you just ask the dealer who quoted you? I am buying 2005 that will need this done too. Interested to know the answer as well. I would think a dealer would assume you want all that done at the same time. SOP from what I’ve read.

I definitely wouldn’t “assume” that to be true without written documentation stating that, or asking directly to list the components being changed during the service. My experience is that they don’t change anything not leaking, or otherwise functional other than what they have to to replace the intended part. For example, if the idlers are not noisy, and showing wear, they won’t change them, unless it’s specified as something included in the service order.

im sure it depends on the dealer, but I think most of them do not change the idlers or tensioner. for me, that's a requirement, especially on an interference engine. but, even if its not, its just too much labor if they fail and you have to go back in there later.

thanks for the comments guys. I am in Atlanta area. I was quoted about $1350 with the pump and tensioner from one dealer.
A well known independent shop quoted me about $1k with everything. 24Kmi/24month (which ever comes last) warranty.

Water Pump alone shows 4.0 for just itself. I'm guessing the 5.7 hours is a combination of the belt and pump together.

On a side note, Last fall I got a quote from my local dealer on timing belt and all associated parts for my son's Avalon. It was over $550. I got them all for around $200 on Amazon (All Aisin parts, too).

You can definitely save huge money doing it yourself, but some folks just don’t have the tools, time, or maybe live in a condo or apartment block where they can’t tear into a vehicle on that level. Then there’s also times when your own time has more value if you work a lot. I’m the kind that even when I can afford to have stuff done, I end up doing it myself because I can’t stand wasting money on stuff that I have knowledge or tools (or both) to accomplish myself. Not to mention my attention to detail is generally way higher than most shops simply because I care more about my vehicle than they do. I definitely don’t have time this season with all my obligations to do my TB, but I’ll find a way to get it done, even if I have to skip a day at work or something to do it.

I had this completed at the dealer Saturday.

$920 after their "coupon" which included the timing belt & water pump. I asked about the pulleys and they said they would inspect for wear and advise if needed. They determined it wasn't needed....

Serpentine belt was $110 for OEM and no charge to put it on. For that price I told them to put the old one on.

I did 4x4 service for an additional $220 which was a transfer case, rear, front dif fluid replacement.

The dealer did not put a timing belt sticker on which I am kind of annoyed about and will request one today.

I asked about changing the plugs since they had it....$320!! I said forget it. Looks like a 10 minute job.

I asked to drain and fill the transmission fluid. They said they would check it out, then declined the service saying it usually causes more problems than it's worth....

They did a look over and only thing they found was a torn front axle boot. $920 to change boots on both sides. I said how much for whole new axles- it was cheaper @ $780... I told them I would wait until it gives me a problem.

He asked about the gas pedal recall. I said as long as they don't cut my pedal. He said they wouldn't cut the pedal. Guess what they did- They cut my pedal. So I have to call him today about that and the timing belt sticker.

Dealer A is where I bought my 4runner and I wasn't happy with a scam the sales people tried pulling on me but they have the best price :hurt: . Dealer B is closest to my work for the next 3 weeks (company moving) then Dealer A will be closer.

Both quoted for same stuff timing belt, waterpump, and fluids involved. Both recommended not changing timing belt tensioner or pulleys due unless they are worn out.

Any recommendations before I call back and schedule?

I worked at a Dealership, we did Belt, Water Pump, Thermostat, Tensioner and Tensioner Pulley.

Anything else was extra, usually Seals, Pulleys and stuff was quoted Parts, and no Extra Labor. (Thanks for that)

I would definitely ask them to do the tensioner and pulley, even if it “seems” to be in working order. They are all the way torn down, so why skimp on a part(s) that have bearings, and are wear items that could ruin the whole job if/when they fail? Makes no sense NOT to do them!

I agree on replacing anything and everything related to the timing belt when getting it done, if any of the components fail prematurely you risk at best not only having the do the job again but if the belt slips or breaks because one the components not replaced it will cause internal engine damage, bent valves, broken pistons, etc., then you're looking at replacing the engine!

I agree with this also. I just want them to get it all done at once and off my list of things to worry about. My 'new to me' has 196k on it. I am not taking any chances.

I think I read your a master tech at Toyota. Why would dealers not recommend changing the timing belt pulleys and tensioner? I asked specifically and the three dealers I talked to said the same think and didn't want to add it to my quote.

Out of curiosity, was it Elmhurst Toyota? They pulled the same crap on me.

Opened the door, saw the cut pedal, and the service writer smiled smugly said said "yep, we cut it" and walked away.

No it was Arlington Toyota. I never had issues with their service before. I did call him and he acted all surprised. He got back to me and said he would order a replacement pedal that wouldn't be as short, but shorter than it was from the factory.
