4.7 V8: Misfire on cylinders 2,4,6, and 8

Out of nowhere, I noticed my '04 developed a really rough idle. Limped it to Advance Auto and the codes indicated a misfire on all even cylinders. There is a couple of older threads with no definite resolution to this issue. Typically don't create a new thread for this kind of stuff, but I'm a couple hours away from home and would appreciate any suggestions.

It could be your coil packs, but all going bad at once would be very odd. First step is to check plugs and wires for signs of wear.

If it turns out being plugs, injectors or coil packs, I have all of them here at my office that I bought new just to troubleshoot my 4.7 when I was having misfire issues. Mine was random misfire and it turned out to be water in the fuel tank. But if you need these parts let me know, I will make you a deal.

I googled you issue and found a thread on a Sequoia that might shed some light on the issue. In this case it doesn't sound good. Have you recently changed the timing belt?

This one was the same issue. A timing belt slip.

It does sound like one bank has slipped timing somehow... did you have a belt replaced recently?

I believe it is a timing issue . The timing belt, based on the receipts I have received from the previous owner, was about halfway through its service life. At the suggestion of the local dealer, I limped it 5 miles down the road to their service department. The truck ran much more smoothly at non-idle RPMS, however, I lost all power and it got really rough (going about 20mph) about 500ft from the dealership. I managed to have enough momentum to roll onto the lot in neutral. Now it misfires on all 8 cylinders, won't start, and the dealership won't reopen until Tuesday afternoon. Thanks for the replies though guys, I probably would have stuck with my gut and not limped it if the timing (pun intended) of your posts worked out a little better. That's how life goes though, and I'll be keeping this thread updated as I learn more.

It was the timing belt, sounds like it jumped a tooth. Waiting to hear if there is any additional damage, but I'm hoping that I got lucky and avoided any interference.

this would be a first.

im curious what happened. poor install on the belt, and components? I have dealt with a few failed timing belts over the years, they typically don't just slip a few teeth. usually what happens is several teeth just get ripped off the belt.
barring that, I don't see how it would be possible to slip a few teeth.

Just brought the truck back home from the dealership, and it's running great again. Looks like the issue was premature timing belt failure, and luckily it didn't jump time far enough to cause any additional damage. The dealership performed the standard belt+water pump job, made sure everything checked out, and sent me on my way.

I have the old belt that was only 70,000 miles old when it failed. It isn't missing any teeth, but it does look pretty worn. I guess that was enough for it to fail.

Overall, I was very happy with the service provided at Cumberland Toyota in Cookeville, TN. The timing belt replacement was something that needed to be done in the not-so-distant future, so I only paid for something that I would have had to pay for anyways. I really lucked out this time; it could have been a whole lot worse. The moral of the story is don't limp your truck around if a whole bank of cylinders goes dead. Hope this helps any V8 owners identify this issue if their engines exhibit the same symptoms, and thanks again to all those who offered advice and suggestions.

FYI there is evidence that pre VVTi V8s are non-interference engines on iH8mud. Post the VVTi upgrade they are definitely interferencee based on owners experiences and TB failures.

Interesting. I did a quick search a few days ago and didn't find any definitive answers, but it seemed to be the consensus that the 2UZ was an interference design. Although it is very possible that the pre-VVTi's different valve train doesn't involve interference. I never considered that, but that could explain why nothing else was damaged.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm planning on checking to see if the part numbers listed on the receipt indicate if a full timing kit was added to my truck. I believe the kits typically include the idlers, tensioner, water pump with gasket, and timing belt. If I can't figure it out, I'm going to call the service department.

I would venture to say that tensioner and idlers were not replaced when timing belt job was done by the previous owner and that was the reason it jump time now… moreover, judging by OP comment that the belt “looked pretty worn after 70K” leads me to believe that previous timing belt job was done pretty poorly (without tensioner and idlers replacement) as well as use of cheap non OEM (or equivalent) belt… I know when I replaced my timing belt @ 90K the old belt looked new.

I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner 4.7L 4WD. I have been dealing with the same issues that the OP mentioned (rough idling and acceleration, multiple cylinder misfires, won't start etc.) I have had several mechanics look at it and suggest different causes or sources for these problems. But as I work on this I keep returning to this post. I'm going to take it to the mechanic and have him replace timing belt and do a complete check. Lets hope for the best.
