4 speed automatic vs 5 speed ('04 > '05+)

Is this true? I've missed this if it's true.

Sorry, I described the issue incorrectly. It is leaking head gaskets on the V6. I don't know how common it is, but it has been reported here by a number of folks:

I know the early V8's are prone to exhaust manifold leaks.

I have heard that if the V8 exhaust manifold cracks that the repair is very expensive. That said, I've seen few posts about that.

Are you projecting?

I don't think I'm superior in any way because I've got the V8. I've driven the V8 and the V6. I think the V8 drives better than the V6. The V8 is more refined and needs a lot less revs to accelerate. The V6 compounds the issue by not being relatively loud and coarse when reving. The 4-speed transmission on the 04-05 doesn't help matters.

I'm sorry you seem to be taking that as an insult, but that's your problem, not mine.

DaveK22, drive 4-speed and 5-speed V6s. I think you'll find that the 5-speed is worth the extra money for the newer truck.

if i was directing at you, i would have quote you or tagged you. trust me, this isn't the first v6 vs v8 discussion

Here's an old post from more than a decade ago where a an '04 V6 (4-sd) ran on a track against an 04 V8 (no vvti).

Alrighty everyone, the results are in.

Today Doanlaw (04 v8 AWD Sport Edition) and Myself (04 SR5 4x4 v6) took our rigs to Carlsbad Raceway to run some laps and see just how different these two engine setups run under controlled conditions. I think you'll be suprised, we sure were!

First off we made sure everything on each rig was as close as possible. We removed our Spare tires, took out our SUB Boxes, took anything else out that wasn't bolted down and both ran with under 3-4 gallons of gas in the tank. Note both of these rigs have the Revtek 3" lift kit installed as well.

We ran 3 passes, one with stock airfilter, one with the v8 running a K&N (just to see), and one with the drivers swapped.

I will type out all the details of our first (and fastest pass) and then give just 1/4 mile ET and MPH.

Pass 1: (our fastest)
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27

Pass 2: V8 with k&n, V6 Stock Air
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.863 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.978
86.11 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.17

Pass 3: Swapped Drivers
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.958 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.907
86.35 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.75

Well, there you have it. Talk amongst yourselves, speculate, etc (I know we have come up with every excuse in the book for why we were faster or not faster on certain parts of the track, hehe) - but the numbers don't lie, these two machines are EXTREMELY close.

Considering this is two different engines, two different transmissions and two different gear ratios, I'm simply amazed. We had a lot of fun and hope these numbers shed some light for both v6 and v8 drivers on what to expect from their rigs.

The best news in my mind is that our 4th gens rock! we run sub 16's STOCK and LIFTED!!! Woo hoo!!

160K miles....there's one of those for sale in MO, but that mileage makes me a little weary.

I hear the stories about how bullet proof these t4r-tanks are, but that to me is a lot. I've read the threads on how many miles the guys on these forums put on their rides, but my assumption is we take better care of ours than the average consumer (huge assumtion - ass U and Me).
Here's the add.

2004 Toyota 4runner

Reasonable?

Good God!!! Here goes the 6 cyl vs the 8 cyl, Again!!! The dude wants to know about transmissions.

My opinion is to go with a 06 or newer, if you can afford it. I bought an 04 a few years ago and have been extremely happy with it. It has 185k on it and we plan on keeping it for a long time. My wife really loves it!!! So, if you find a killer deal on an older one than I would not hesitate on buying it. The transmission was never a factor for us. And, we have had no problems with the cylinder gaskets. If we do, I will spend the $2500 to replace them and do a top overhaul.

No truck nutz? I'm impressed. :D

he does have a little bit of decency. i hated that stupid truck, especially when the one before it was actually nice.

I have an '04 V6 with the four speed trans and I am always surprised by how long and well my truck will coast without any throttle. My buddy has a V8 with the 5 speed and he complains constantly about what he considers to be engine braking whenever off the throttle.

I will add that up until recently, one complaint I have with my 4 speed and ever since she was brand new, is an inconsistent upshift from first to second. At part throttle sometimes it's smooth and other times it's sloppy. I've always hated this 1 - 2 shift and even had the dealer go through it with no improvement. For ten years now I lived with it but just a few months ago it seemed to just fix itself. So now with 95K miles I finally got smooth and consistent 1 - 2 upshifts regardless of throttle or conditions. Finally!

This particular 4-speed has been used in a TON of V6 and V8 Toyotas for well over two decades, and they're known for being bulletproof. I had 280k supercharged miles on my last one and it never skipped a beat.

But, I do have to agree that it would be very nice to have one additional gear on the low end with the V6. Sometimes the 1 -2 does kind of suck.

I think they advertised another 1mpg after switching to the 5-speed (or maybe it was after the valvetrain upgrade), but real-world experience typically shows otherwise. They're pretty much identical in terms of fuel economy.

In my opinion: the 5-speed would be nice and it's a great tranny, but I wouldn't turn down a good 4-speed, either.
