Is your car in 4wd? If so, take it out and the light will go off.

Could be a bad actuator if its not meant to be in 4wd.

hi guys! so the other day i was hill climbing on the edge of some corn fields and went to hit my 4WD and nothing hum... thats odd i thought..... so i tried 4lo and also nothing it went into low range in the trans but no front wheel power luckily my rear diff lock was working fine and got me through the mud and back to the road. i've gone through a few troubleshooting steps its NOT the vacuum i have vacuum at the VSV and it made no difference when i switched the hoses over. i dont how ever have power to both plugs the redish brown has voltage but doesn't send power to the blueish green. i checked the position switch on the transfer case and it had power when pushed. oh and BTW i got a 97 LIMITED with the multi-mode 4WD with the push button 4hi. one thing i did notice is there is NOT two switches on the TC the FSM says there is and others on here said there was but i only got one,but that must not matter tho because before my 4x4 broke i used it every single day without problems for the past two years i've owned my runner... the next step that i plan on doing here shortly is the relay if i do need one does anybody know the part number or where to buy? oh and one thing i thought i should mention is that the runners with the J shift and not the push 4WD DO NOT have a ADD relay, but im sure after all these years since this thread was posted you've figured that out already.

Nobody HUH? damn i came here from toyotanation cuz TN would always take like 5 days for a response seemed like here was more active must have been mistaken... bummer...

try posting your own thread... i know it really shouldnt make a difference, but i bet it will, 99toy4 does not own his runner anymore(a friend of mine bought it from him). this thread is old and most people know that cause 99toy4 hasnt been on here in a couple years, so everyone is thinking "oh another newb, and some old thread revival..." so they ignor the thread.

im not the knowledgeable on the multi mode tcase and their 4wd system so i probably wont be much help. but id say check the wires for breaks or bad connections/corrosion that might be your issue here. other wise yeah hopefully someone else can give a hand

OK thanks!

After the hoses as above, the first thing to check (because it's cheap and easy and nothing works without it) is the one way check valve between the manifold and the VSV's(Vacuum Switching Valves). Find the two VSV's on the driver's side fender wall--the short VSV hoses go to a mini-manifold that connects to a reserve canister and also receives vacuum from the engine via the check valve. One long hose goes from each VSV to one side of the actuator in the front diff.

Make sure there is vacuum present at this mini-manifold. If not, then pull the check valve and blow into it both ways to check one-way function.

If there is vacuum, then verify that one VSV on the fender is sending vacuum to the front diff. and one is not. Then switch to 4WD and see if the vacuum switches VSV's. If it does, problem is in the front diff. If it does not, problem is electrical and you need then check the switch on the transfer case. If one VSV turns on and off and one doesn't, you have a bad VSV.

That should get you started.

Where is this switch on the transfer case? My VSV's are not switching over, as you describe....There has to be a fuse controling this circuit as well?

Where on the transfer case is this switch located? I have a 98 limited 4runner and mine's not switching at the VSV's? I looked briefly, but did not see a switch. Is it on top? in back?

I was getting the blinking light of 4x4 misery as well. I found that the smaller grey connector with two wires on the T-Case motor was loose. This allowed sludge/dirt to enter the contacts. I cleaned both sides of the connector and now more flashing 4x4 light. 2001 LTD btw. I can take a pic of the connector if needed.

Hey guys I’m trouble shooting my 2000 limited 4x4 and I changed out my transfer case thinking it was bad I had ran 12v to the tC actuator and it didn’t go in and out of 4wd and I’ve had the non stop blinking 4wd lights I changed tC and same thing I tested vsv in and out of 4wd and the blue one is the only one with vacuum I’m at a dead end trying to figure out how to get my 4x4 to work someone please point me into the right direction

Here's a dropbox link for a 2000 4Runner. There is troubleshooting instructions in section 27 VF3AM that should help you out. 2000 4Runner FSM - Printable - Google Drive
