4 x 4 Blinking ….. HELP NEEDED

Hello All

I have a 1999 Toyota 4runner limited. Because of the snow and while in "neutral mode" i pressed the 4WD button. Now the 4WD indicator lights on the dash is blinking non-stop… (all 4 tires on the display plus the yellow light in the middle), even if I push the button to de-activate it.

I tried driving in reverse and forward a few times (previously it helped) but this time no luck.

I am still in 2wd as the car is slipping left and right in the snow.

Further more i noticed that when i try to turn left or right it feels as if the brakes are being pushed and very hard to drive.

I can drive on dry pavement with no problem, but am i damaging something else????



It seems that the truck is between 4wd and 2wd. Trying to engage 4wd but for some reason cannot.

The same thing happened last winter and the Toyota stealer-ship wanted 3000$ to fix it.

I took the truck in an empty parking spot with lots of snow and ice and drove her in circles for 30 minutes , it began working fine and stayed working fine for the whole year.

Now i cannot find any more snow or ice on the road……….. to try the stunt again

Try putting car In neutral. And if that doesn't work try accelerating to 30 then slowly braking to a stop

Read through the stuff here and it may help you. My lights have blinked non-stop for a long time, but I've had no trouble with my 4wd working.

welcome to the club.

Try these
1. set the 4wd push-button to the 2wd position and turn the truck off and let it sit over night.
2. If its still blinking in the morning, push the button to the 4wd position and drive to where you are going, sometimes I get it to randomly engage while just driving.

Once you get it to stop flashing, change the fluids in the diffs and transfer case. Mine hasnt done that blinking BS since I changed the fluids to Mobil 1 full synth.

I tried this at various speeds ( 30 , 50 ,70) and various braking ( from slow braking to fast braking for each speed). But still no luck and light is still blinking.

Not sure if your damaging anything, but I had a similar problem on my 4runner. On mine it ended up being a switch/sensor on the front diff that tells the ecu if 4x4 front diff was engaged or not. It's simple to test. Remove the switch, hook up an ohm meter to it, push the switch in, see if it changes. If it doesn't change you know what the problem is and replace it. After I replaced mine it worked awesome and much faster than it had.

The more i turn the steering wheel left or right , the car gets slower and harder to drive. As if the brakes are being applied. When the sterling wheel is at its maximum left or right the car stops until i push harder on the gas. Did this happen with you also?

Where can i find this "switch/sensor" ? And when hooking up on Ohm meter what am i measuring the resistance or Amp or voltage?

voltage, and the problem your describing just sounds as if you have teh 4wd engaged....

when teh 4wd is on the front end becomes heavy and if you turn to tight it won't wont to go without a little love from the gas pedal, this is because your differential is quasi-locked in the push button 4wd mode, so when the wheels are turned rather sharply your fighting against the gears in your turck....

sidenote i wish the government still educated people with useful information instead of this propaganda b.s. they shovel down our throats now a days.....

the sensor is located on the front diff..... is sounds to me as if the sensor is just sticky, as your 4wd is engaging, it's just a bit slow.....follow the advice of others above on truobleshooting.

This happened to me this spring. It would not disengage form 4WD. I didn't want to put a fix to 4WD since summer is coming so I unplugged the Battery for a minute and plugged it back in. The light stopped and 4WD is disengaged again until I press the button on the shifter. Its a temporary fix till you can get to it. Thanks for reminding me, winter is coming.

I tried taking out the battery over night, and when i reinstalled it the next morning. The blinking was still there.
