400,000 Mile Club

Damn 400K! I hope I make it that far. I’m at 220k and still going sting with no major issues. Although I hope this doesn’t get in that way of me reaching 400.

Did someone take a dump in your engine when you weren’t looking?

Just purchased a '97 Limited w/ 284k miles from original owner with Carfax Maintenance history going back to day 1 dealer maintenance.

Car is in some pristine condition and got it dirt cheap from the grandma. So I plan for this 4Runner to make it to this club too.

Your area is higher priced than mine. It looks nice for over 500K, but questionable on the motor and trans life left. If I was buying it with knowing I may throw a motor or trans in it where it wouldn't bother me I would buy it. I would only do it if you can swap out a motor or trans yourself, its a mechanics special. I'm thinking a max of $1K for that one as a straight rolling chassis, plus its a 2wd. Sounds like it had some good maintenance upkeep anyway.
Here's one I made a deposit on, picking it up tomorrow, Texas rust free 98 2wd auto that just came up north here, with about 310K on it, runs good. I'm getting it to do a 5 speed and 4wd swap from a rusted out parts rig I have. He was asking $1,600 I offered him $1K, he accepted.

Nice thanks for the reply. I am for sure not a mechanic, so I guys it’ll have to be a pass on that one. Runners are being sold for a premium out here, that one you just got sounds like a score! Oh well I guess the search continues...

400k is not a realistic expectation with my 99 Limited. I have maintenance documents from PO from day one and he ha gone through alot of repairs and warranty work. I got it with 151k and have been fixing stuff every few month or so. Stuff just keeps wearing out and I am at 173k. The most recent was a bad fuel pump, plugged cat, and leaking injectors. I feel this truck has given me more issues than my jeeps before it. I bought it hoping that the Toyota reliability would save me some $$ to spend elsewhere but that is not happening.

I see 200k but definitely not 400.

It’s not your truck thats the problem — it’s the previous owner who abused or neglected the truck for 151k miles before you got it. Bad fuel pump, plugged cat and leaking injectors at 151k on a 3rd gen 4Runner = neglect or abuse in my mind. 400k miles is very realistic for a 3rd gen that was not neglected or abused.

Hope you can work through these issues and get your truck back to good health!

Sounds like the guy might have been running really cheap fuel or something strange like that. Bad fuel pump, plugged cat and leaking fuel injectors? Seem all inline with some gunky fuel or something.

Running a partially clogged fuel filter for a long time will wear out the fuel pump much sooner than expected because of the added pressure the pump must overcome to supply the fuel at the correct pressure. I still am on the original fuel pump likely because I change the fuel filter every 30k miles, though doing it at 60k miles is OK.:trophy:

agree with you fully here, a fuel filter is less than $10 on rock auto.. i change them once a year with roughly 15,000 km a year, surprising how much small particles are in the filter when i cut them open. i may pull the tank next year and check .

Like I mentioned, the PO gave me maintenance docs from Toyota. He followed the recommended service schedule and the paperwork is a little over an inch thick. They were an older retired couple that garaged it and really seemed to take care of it. It had very little rust but it gave them issues over the years. They had the radiator milkshake, two broken antennae motors, faulty fuel gauge/sending unit, quite a few CEL's related to sensors, no starts, leaking evap core, failed starter, faulty 02's. The truck had issues with ABS and CEL popping on at 1600 miles.

I had to replace the steering rack, both rear axle seals, both cats, both 02's, injectors, pcv valve, fuel pump, ball joints, vc gasket, shocks, rear springs, etc.

The gas tank was clean with no debris and pump filter looked good when I did the pump so I doubt it was dirty fuel causing the issues. The fuel filter was replaced by them at one point when diagnosing a no start and again by me a few thousand miles ago.

Sometimes i call it the black sheep of Toyota. Despite all the issues I will probably still keep it around and convert it to a winter only vehicle for when the lady needs 4wd. Gonna run it till it runs no more.

Overall 3rd gen 4runners (I've had 3, just bought #4 yesterday) and its cousin 1st gen Tacomas (I've had 2) have been the most reliable vehicles I've owned. I only had 1 that I had to do anything major on before 300K, cause the jackass I bought it off ran down to only 1 quart of oil and wrecked the motor. I run these things 1,000 miles per week fully loaded with heavy gear, so I really see what these things can do. Hopefully you can get past those quirks and have the satisfaction that the majority of us have with our rigs.

Timing belt interval?

So I just clicked 401K, and my timing belt was last changed at 307K. I cant find a scheduled interval for changes with this many miles.... What would you recommend? Do it now- is what I am feeling....

congrats on your odo achievement. yep, i'd concur with that. i just did mine today at a comparatively light 192k with the previous one rumored to have been done at 114k. it's better to be safe than sorry, for sure. make sure you get grill clips. even recent ones shattered on me.
