4Hi = Burnt rubber smell

As the title suggests, I can smell a distinct burnt rubber odor after using my rig in 4Hi. I don't smell it until I get out of the truck and it seems like it's emanating from the front end somewhere...

Anyone have any ideas? I've done some searching, but all I found were examples of people with over-filled diffs (I don't think this would smell like burnt rubber).

Hey Fish do you have a trans cooler installed? I experienced high temps running around out here in 4hi, got a scanguage ll if you need one.

[MENTION=76419]Doc2012[/MENTION] Last time I looked at my boots they were in great shape, so I don't think that's the issue, but I'll keep it in mind. Also, if I understand the 4wd system correctly, aren't they always spinning so that if it were a boot issue I would notice it regardless of 4Hi?
[MENTION=72511]thor999[/MENTION] I do not have a trans cooler, but I do have the Torque app (bluetooth OBDII reader) and my while my trans temps get warm - particularly when driving in the mountains - they're not too hot (220 is the highest I've noticed). That is an interesting point though; the trans cooler lines are rubber, right?

Come 4/26, the light rail will open and I'll be able to start working on the new radiator/timing belt/water pump install. The light rail line starts about 1.5 miles away from my place and will literally drop me off at my office - so my truck should start seeing a whole lot fewer miles soon!

Another thing I've noticed recently is this: if my front wheels spin/slip independent of the rear wheels while in 4Hi, the front dif (maybe the transfer case though?) makes a lot of racket. I can't tell if it's some sort of traction control thing or if it's grinding itself to oblivion.

Does anyone else hear awful noises when their front wheels slip in 4Hi?

sounds like your center diff lock may be stuck in the on postion, causing excess tire scrub in the front, hence the burnt rubber smell.

I had what I thought was a burnt rubber smell also, but turned out to be valve cover leak. Smelled just like burnt rubber.

Does the noise also happen when the center diff is locked?

The TRAC can make noises kinda like that and engaging the CDL will disable TRAC so that would be a quick way of ruling that out.

I'll futz with that after work by finding some snowy patch and turning the CDL on off to see if it's (1) able to engage/disengage and (2) if that noise persists with the CDL engaged.
