4k rpm then sputter, choke, backfire!

I just bought my first 4runner, 1998 sr5 4x4 with 110k. Problem i have is when you hit 4 grand, its done, starts sputtering, backfire noises from intake, chokes out completely. All the way up to 4k it runs strong, then WHAM! instant brickwall. Does anyone have any clue what does this?

Rev limiters do have a similar effect, but backfiring means there's a problem somewhere. I agree that you should start with plugs and wires and add a new fuel filter to that list because it's cheap and another possible cause. If the timing is too advanced, it will cause backfiring too, but it doesn't seem as likely to me because it seems to run fine at lower rpms. Still it could be a timing issue.
 
Im gonna change the plugs, wires, fuel filter, clean the mass air and throttle body. It feels like its run out of gas instantly when it happens, i have no check engine lights on, and i was told the coil packs were replaced last year. I was thinking fuel pressure regulator also. If i figure it out i will let everyone know, as i know that a couple other people have the same issue.

even if the CEL isn't on. it could have stored a error code in the memory. i would still get it checked before you do anything else since its free
 
Ok, changed plugs, wires, air filter, pcv, cleaned mass air, throttle body, fuel filter. Runs like a damn demon......till it hits the rev limiter at 4100rpm. That has got to be what it is. It cold stops in its tracks and bounces just like it has hit the limiter. getting annoying. :mad:

There not built for speed, its an SUV, you want power? Get a Hot hatch or a coupe.

He could always read a previous quote that says for him to get it checked out. IDK, i guess that is a bad idea.
 
The way the OP describes it... it seems to be running great and then hits the brick wall. The link I put in my previous post, check the last post in that link. The guy said it was the ECM. I'm betting that's what controls the rev limiting factor on these trucks.
 
Ive been sitting here brain farting for the past couple of hours, To the poster of "get a hot coupe or fast car, its an suv" or whatever he said, I have an automatic slick, ever try and merge on a St Louis highway at rush hour, hammer the throttle, then when your JUST about to make it in front of the KENWORTH......your suv cuts all power, and you almost get creamed by a Budweiser truck at 60mph. THIS is how i found out i had a problem, If i want speed, i own a yamaha R-6, goes faster than small planes. I want a suv that does do what its supposed to, now i have been searching online, seems a ton of people with 98 and 99 runners have this issue, my question is this, do these trucks have the trans range sensor, or pretty much the "car wont rev past 4000rpm in neutral" crap? thats what it feels like its doing, and everything checks out. Im wondering if the truck is telling the ecm it is in gear or not.
 
I would just quickly rev it up past 4100 in neutral and then you'll know if it can do it or not. Of course you don't want to hold it there, just goose it. Don't do it when the engine is cold though, you want to make sure everything is all lubed up and warm (giggity).
 
i got the same rpm cutoff brian, acts just like it does when in gear, 4.2k, barely on the throttle or hammering it, and it is bouncing just like a limiter, but it runs beyond great till it hit that rpm point. Where would i get a ecm for this? i have only owned it for 2 weeks or so. Damn tune up parts cost 200 bucks tonight only....thank god i paid 1500 total for it:boink:
