4L won't engage

Hi all,

I have an issue with engaging the 4L . It is an 03 SR3 V8. I have read all the posts I could find on this issue. My problem is that when I follow the procedure and with transmission in N, brake depressed and then switch turned to 4L nothing happens. When I say nothing there is no beeping , noises etc. It is as if the switch is not working.

I have tried taking it out of neutral (still in 4L) and there is not idiot light or beeping sounds.

Has anyone come across this behaviour? I can lock the diff with no problem in 4H.

What are your dash lights doing? I shift into 4H, wait for the lights to stop blinking and turn solid (and the beeping to stop), then shift into 4L.
 
I would say that the switch isn't working as you mentioned. Maybe you should try to undo the dash panel to get to the switch plug and see if it's plugged in? And if it is plugged in, unplug then plug back in. I tried mine after reading your post and mine when in park I turn to 4Lo it beeps and the 4Lo light blinks. Yours does nothing. Who knows it might be just as simple as that? Let me know what happens...

V8 models come with full time 4H, and dial switch for 4L, if I'm not mistaken. I'm guessing you have a V6? Which is a part time 4WD. Your dial switch is 2H, 4H and 4L?

I have v8 full time 4H. I get not activity (lights or beeps) on the dashboard when manipulating the switch. So I'm thinking the actuators don't her any signal to engage. Like I said the diff is locking fine in 4H.

I have taken the dashboard out to double check the connection of the wire harness. It is solid . ( I installed aftermarket radio this past winter so had everything out and the initial though was I didn't plug the switch back on).

How would I test the switch ? There are 4 wires on the harness connector. If it was only 2 it would be an easy test. :)
 
My physical knob is broke. I can push it down and turn it and it feels like it should work, but it's not actually turning anything. However, I can pull the knob off and turn the shaft behind it, that it rides on, and it'll work.
 
Pray that it's not the actuator... I'm going through that right now. At minimum a $1500 fix if you can find the right mechanic that's not going to up charge you on the part.
 
So , problem solved . One of the pins in the switch was bent. One that was taken care of she got 4LO.
