4lo Problem

Tonight I was waiting for my brother to get out from school, and while I was waiting I started playing around with all the controls to make sure they work. I have 2005 V8 LTD 4X4. I turned the 4 wheel drive knob from 4HI TO 4LO, and nothing happened. The indicator light didn't come on, and there was no sound made. I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Without asking a ton of questions about what your exact steps are...start with owners manual and come back and update us.

Have you had the stereo out since you last used the 4wd?

Happened to me once, I forgot to plug the switch back in...

The manual says take it to your local Toyota dealership if 4 wheel drive doesn't engage properly. I have taken the radio out recently, and one of the first things I did was to make sure the 4X4 knob was plugged in, but sure enough it was. I checked to see if maybe a blown fuse caused this, but none of the fuses were blown, and I disconnected the battery to see if that could do anything, but nothing has changed.

The ECM....behind the glove box has two plugs going into it, one to the t-case and one to the switch. Make sure something did not unplug it.

You may have a bad switch...

You did put it in neutral before turning the switch, right?

I figured out the problem. After I finished installing my ipod kit, and was putting my dash back together. I plugged in the 4 wheel drive knob, but when I plugged it in I bent one of the prongs that touches the wires. I just had to remove the 4X4 knob, and bend the prong straight up, and now everything is operational.

Glad you figured out your problem, Trob.

This is a great discussion that helps people like me go and do some preventative work/flexing on that actuator, reducing the risk that we have a useless 4LO.

i am having a similar problem. I just split my transfer case and replaced the transfer case motor. Upon reinstalling the transfer case I now have no 4lo. I dont get a beep or the light trying to come on. We checked all the fuses and they are good. We are having a hard time finding a wiring diagram for that part of the 4ruuner so we can try some electrical wiring. The diagrams on all data do not match what we see for colors at the 4wd selector switch. That is making it hard to test the switch or supply 12 volts to the motor to see if we can force it to go into 4wd. Any help or ideas would be awesome.
