With the snow we received over the weekend i used 4 hi most of the weekend. While starting my car for the day I decided to see what 4 lo is all about. It will not engage. It flashes 4 lo on the dashboard and also beeps at me. ANything I am doing wrong, or does something need to be fixed.

If you hear a beep most likely you are doing something wrong.

To go into 4LOW you have to be stopped and put the transmission in Neutral and than try to select into 4LOW. Try that.

When was the last time you had it in 4LOW?

The actuator is notorious for freezing if not cycled regularly.

I cycle mine once a month.

You might have to replace the actuator with a new one. $700 part.

I have never had it in 4 lo my brother recently purchased a 4runner and they had to order a part because his would not engage. so I decided to check mine. any ideas on how to get it unfrozen?

I bought my 4runner used and had the same problem. I could hear something ever so quietly try to actuate and I was just persistent and toggled between 4hi and 4lo for around 20-30min until it engaged. Now I cycle it every few months and haven't had a problem since.

I rarely use 4Low, maybe twice since I bought my 4runner. So, I decided to test it since I read this thread. No issues, yes!

I occasionally need to move a few feet in either direction and then back into neutral before mine will engage. This was a little nugget in the owners manual.

well after messing with it for a few more days. nothing but the whine. gonna have the mechanic buddy give it a few lovetaps

Bought a 2006 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Offroad a few weeks ago. With 124,000 miles on it, I was concerned about the 4H and 4L, as well as the rear diff locker. Made the sales rep find me an off-road trail so I could test them. All worked fine.

Salesman got nervous when I crawled over some rocks.

tested my 05 sport today (bought it a month ago or so...) no issues, slipped right into 4Lo, 4Hi and center diff engage and disengage with no issues. phew!

The 07 on the other hand still has issues (beeping) and refuses to go into 4Lo... when I don't have to lay on ice or snow to get under the truck I'm gonna give it some love taps while the wifey turns the knob, it's her truck after all... gotta make her work for it.

Without starting another thread on this, what particular part are you tapping? I'm having the same issue on my '06 V8. 4lo just beeps at me.

Ok, I just had the same problem on my 04 4Runner. 4low will not engage and continue beeping.

I played with it for 20 min or so, going back in forth from 4hi to 4low, putting in drive and reverse ....and Hooray it worked.
After it engaged the first time, went on easy the 2nd and 3rd time and hopefully will not give me any troubles in the future.

You'll want to use your 4Lo at least monthly for 10 miles or so just to keep it working. Common for it to seize up. Mine wasn't working when I bought it until I took a roadtrip through the southwest and in 120 degree heat and 8 hours of driving, I tried it on a whim and it unstuck. Been working great ever since.

Cannot Toggle between 4WD High and 4WD Low

I have a 2005 V8 (full-time 4WD) and it will not toggle between 4WD High and 4WD Low. The dashboard 4WD Low indicator light has stopped turning on nor flashing all of a sudden and neither the transfer case nor actuator make any clicks, thumps, thuds nor beeps anymore. I have had it for 12 years without any issues at all and have used the toggle monthly most of the entire time in the past. Its been about 2 maybe 3 months since toggle switch last used though. I have tried the rubber hammer, the parking brake, the neutral methods and checked the actuator fuse under the steering wheel etc. Nothing at all.

Not to hijack this thread but this forum doesnt seem to allow noobs to create new threads for some reason… I have the V8 and it will not toggle between High and Low. If the light isn't turning on and you're getting no feedback at all, you may have a faulty switch or the knob has stripped out. Or a fuse. Something other than a mechanical failure of the system.
