4R Storage Ideas

As a new owner of a 2008 4R, the one thing I miss is a good storage area for emergency items.

Looking at the engine compartment, there is a large area on the passenger side above the wheel well. Looks like a nice place to bolt on some kind of sealed storage box to keep some jumper cables and maybe a few small items.

Anyone done anything for additional interior storage? Like to keep jumpers, flares, flashlight, etc.... Perhaps a few tools.

I wouldnt put anything in the engine bay. I had a small mechanics bag with the items you mentioned along with a qt of oil in the compartment on the right side in the trunk area. The funny L shaped compartment.

Same issue here, I am storing the items you described in my homemade storage box mounted in the cargo area above the driver side wheel well.

I believe the FJ guys mount a metal ammo can in the engine where you described to store tools impervious to heat.

Wow ^^^ thats very clean J.A., I notice the L shaped compartment has what looks like a speaker in it, is that so?

Funny.......Yesterday I was about to post a thread about the storage compartments to see what do you guys normaly keep in there or If any one uses something else or built or made mods.

I can't speak for him, but that's location of the factory subwoofer for the premium sound system on some models. My Limited has this subwoofer... 8-speaker surround sound... me likey :D

Yep, Factory subwoofer that is included with the Navagation package. Funny thing is I would probably rather have the extra storage compartment.:)

Extra storage would be nice, but I am in love with that sound system! But I'm a music freak...

Aha! Gotcha, not to rub it in or anything but it fits a qt of oil and small tool bag perfectly :dancin:

ETA: I like my rear mirrors too more than premium sound!

I only have the Nav System with the sub and still have the mirrors...which I like...but man do I miss the compartment for storage. The sound on the system I have sucks but I'm coming from many custom built systems so I have high expectations. So far I have kept my first aide kit, simple tools, and jumper cables in small cases stored under my cargo deck.

I bought the OEM cargo net from toyota; it opens up and I have a first aid kit, and a tool kit in there. it stays put and doesnt roll around. also works great with the 2-tier folding storage that I have in the back.
-and I would never trade the 10-speaker system for a little storage compartment!

Here's a follow-up showing where I have found some extra usable storage space! I wrapped them in a small micro-fiber cloth to stop rattling around but removed them for the pictures.

In here are a few flares and a small halon fire ext. The compartment is actually fairly large inside.

I keep my jumper cables and first aid kit in the rear, passenger side compartment in the cargo area. On the small compartment over the rear, driver side tire I keep some bungees. On the small compartment over the rear passenger side tire I keep a small hand towel (usually used to wipe off my dog if she gets wet or muddy).

I keep a small flashlight and Letherman in my glove box as well.

The flashlight in with the jack is a good idea.

AE1M, can you post a pic of the fire extinguisher you have? It's hard to believe you can fit it in that small opening.

why dont you just either buy or build a storage box, if you build one, you can make it any size you want you, heres what I did:

I have plenty of storage for now, lol

Does your 9 incher work well? Lol...I'm going to have to get one of those! I have a bigger one in my travel trailer but never had an extinguisher in my 4R...

Did those covers come off easy on yours? I tried taking mine off but they were not coming off easily and I did not want to damage them. did you use a screwdriver in the slot?
