4runner 1997 fuel filter replacement procedure

Hi, Got a 1997 4runner 4 cyl. I want to replace the fuel filter. What's the proper procedure for relieving the pressure in the fuel lines before I replace it? Its easy to access under the car right? I know in the Tacoma the filter is way up under the engine manifold...thanks

I'm not sure about the 4cyl but in my V6 Tacoma and V6 4Runner, the fuel filter is along the frame rail on the drivers side. I did not relieve the pressure in the lines, just simply unbolted the fuel lines, removed the old filter and put the new one on. Everything went well.

It's directly under the intake manifold, I can't see any way to replace it without pulling the manifold, had a new filter sitting here a couple months now.

Don't remove the intake manifold, that's just a hassle and inviting more potential problems. The access isn't too bad, if you jack up the driver side front, place on a jackstand, remove the driver side front tire, and then remove the wheel well splash guards that keeps the majority of the water and mud from splashing all over the engine bay.

When the engine is cold, start by slightly loosening the fuel line fittings first. A little bit of pressurized gas in the lines will bleed off, (have a small container to catch the gas) then unscrew the fuel lines the rest of the way. Then unbolt the filter from the side of the engine block. Installation is that process reversed.
