When I tried to start my 4runner' 99 it won't start for 1st,2nd,3rd ... time but eventually will start the engine. It happens very frequently.
For example: If the car starts after a couple of tried (turn the key to start position 5 times) then I drove for 5- 10 minutes then I stop the car and the same cycle happen again.

1- When I turn the ignition ON before starting the car:
- The lights come ON in the instrument panel.
- The "Check engine" light come on
2- When I turn the ignition key to "Start" position nothing happens, the starter won't crank.
3- I just change battery couple month ago

What could cause the "No start no crank problem"?
- anti-theft system?
- ignition switch?
- starter ?
- starter solenoid?

I appreciate your help,
Toan

Couple things

1. Check your terminals on your battery, and take note on what type you have. Some don't like having those green/red corrosion rings.

2. We have a know starter issue and at times needs the starter contacts replaced.

Starter contacts would be my bet. My rig, around 100K, started having issues starting. Would try a few times and then would start. Eventually, it just stopped starting. Replaced the contacts, and now am good to go, starts every time!

Hi ICD,
Thanks for the quick help, I checked the battery connector it tight, cleans and no corrosion. You mention starter contacts replaced? it is not the starter, right? The starter is the original, well, 14 years not change yet so

Thanks very much,
Toan

Disconnect your battery, then disconnect the starter power wire & clean it so it looks like new with sandpaper, also do the ground that goes to the engine block. Reconnect everything and start it up.
