4Runner alternator upgrade (gen 5)

rigtec when you goto DC Powers site, they only list 4runners up to 2009.......which are you suppose to order for a 2014?

Yeah,

I mentioned that in my last post. The model number is here on this thread... somewhere? I'll find it and you can take a look and see what you think. Once again, I wasn't meaning to be unsupportive to you...AT ALL!

When you said that you didn't know much about these alternators... I just wanted to be supportive to your efforts in making the right choices; 'BEFORE' you spend your money!

"I'll find the part number and post it here"!

rig, cheers!

Found it Brian:
for those who have wanted to order one the model # is: NSA-11517-270XP. This alternator IS the one that will fit your gen-5 4Runner!

That part number is from Nations Starter and Alternator... Not DC Power Engineering! ...and remember, some newer 4Runners are now using a single wire alternator, so the # I provided does not apply; call them for the conversion part number!

I definitely suggest calling them to double check you have the right part... The alternator for the 4th gen is extremely similar to the 5th gen and I spent a long, long time trying to get the wrong one to fit. A 5 minute phone call would have saved me several hours of pain and headache.

Subbed this thread. I definitely need to do something with the power situation. I am running a dual battery setup, 2 100A AGM Group 31's. I will first try the alternator voltage booster, such as this one https://www.hkbelect.com/.

If that doesn't work then I either need to do the alternator upgrade, which sounds like $800+ with labor, or perhaps a DC-DC charger (RedArc or similar) would be a better way to go......but still, those are $1000 installed easy.

Really hoping the HKB swings me like .5-.7 more volts.......I think that would do it. I am charging at 13.0-13.2.......that doesn't cut it. I need at LEAST 13.7 and ideally I would like 14.2.

It's a fairly easy DIY project if you have some of the tools. nglayton did a good write up here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/237093-nglaytons-mod-thread-2.html#post2754562

I didn't follow it exactly and took a few shortcuts. If you youtube search alternator replacement for 4th gens it's fairly similar. Remove battery and tray, lift driver front side, and take off the belt. I didn't take off the wheel or anything else off and I didn't have much trouble.

Best of luck on your decisions forward!

At the moment we're working on migrating to a new site, if you'd like to place and order give us a call and we can get you setup properly! (951) 509-5617

In general, if youre upgrading the alternator, would you recommend just purchasing an aftermarket unit, or having an alternator shop mod/rewind it for high amperage? Does the alternator change require resetting or tuning the ecu? Thanks

Buy an aftermarket unit. No sense in trying to rebuild the stock one to higher levels. It's just a bolt in and go... may need to go to a different size belt depending on the pulley on the unit. No tuning is needed.

Hi forum team'

Whenever I decide to post some 4Runner modification or build project that I'm involved with, before I post it, I'll always ask myself if this will add anything to the forum that's different from what has already been contributed, or is it just... da' same ole thang'. :pimp: But I really like when I find out that it's different because I can't find much info by doing a search, and that's sorta what happened with this. Before my new alternator arrived, I did a 5'th gen 4r alternator replacement search; guess I felt a little 'intimidated' due to the lack of room available in which to remove the old one. n a 5th gen, give yourself plenty of extra time to do this one; even the service time estimate guide advises 1.5 hrs to do this job, which is just short of the actual time that it took and this mechanic works really fast.

What's going on??? BTW: Any one of a member's posts will have the option to msg the member by clicking their name; so feel free!

rigtec, what is the thinking behind paralleling to the battery with the aux load positive? Did you consider running from the alternator positive terminal to the aux loads directly, bypassing the battery?

Thanks for this write-up!
