4runner dealer maintenance

Ok, I've searched and gathered what I could, but what I'm missing is information on the warranty.

I bought a certified pre-owned 4runner from a Toyota dealership and it has the 100,000 powertrain warranty. In order to keep that warranty from being voided, is it necessary to have all 15K, 20K, 30K, etc. maintenance performed?

I've owned several cars and put that all past 100,000 without any issues. All that I've ever done is change oil, change transmission or differential oil at 40K intervals, and things such as spark plugs/belts/hoses, etc.

Does anything need to be done different with the 4runner, or must I adhere to the suggested dealer maintenance?

you need to follow the maintenance in the warranty book, but you don't have to have it done at the dealership. you can do it yourself or have an independent mechanic do it.

even for the items that are just visual inspections, keep a written record with dates. for things like oil or fluid changes keep receipts for materials.

Don't follow dealer schedules, follow the manufacturer's schedules.

On the warranty, look to what it says specifically; I'd guess it requires you to "properly maintain" the vehicle but I can't see where they'd void it if you missed the intervals.

That said, what makes you want to extend the tire rotation past 5,000 miles or extend the oil change past 10,000 miles?

I guess what I'm saying is that some of the things in the Toyota recommended maintenance are just silly. Granted I haven't priced the services, I imagine they're quite high just for a tech to "check the installation of the driver's mat" or "inspect the wiper blades".

Most of the intervals do just look like a tire rotation and/or oil change, which I keep tabs on.

The first response is better than mine--do it yourself and keep good records. But all maintenance--good or bad--leaves evidence, just like all driving leaves evidence. If you abused it and didn't maintain it, which should void your warranty, it should be pretty easy to tell.

And yes, change your own engine and cabin air filters. If you feel adequate doing brakes, up to you. I'm not checking the tension on the timing and other engine belts, that's above my pay grade.

Well, you definitely want to do all the maintenance and checks they suggest but you can do them yourself. Mat still under my feet? Check. Wipers wiping OK? Check.

Definitely the last thing you want to do is pay the dealer for their whatever-mile service package. Those are always jacked way up. If you have the dealer do it make them break it out to individual services - almost always cheaper that way. Better yet do them yourself or have an independent shop do it.

i just scanned through the required maintenance and didn't see anything except the normal fluids, tire rotations, filters and inspection items in the first 100,000 miles. what items do you think are silly?

if your vehicle didn't come with the warranty and maintenance booklet just google "toyota 4runner warranty guide" and you can download it from toyota. each 5k service has boxes you can check off and then initial, date and write mileage at the bottom as you complete them. scan and save all of your receipts (if you don't scan them, store them inside because thermal printed ones will fade over time if stored in a hot vehicle)

Got it. Everyone's responses is more/less what I was looking for.
I just didn't know if it was "required" to have all services performed and checked off on at a Toyota dealership, or if I could have such services performed at a shop that I actually trust.
