Question. To sell or not to sell


I have a 2002 2wd sr5 120k, tranny cooler with remote filter, new tall 99 coils and bilstein 5100 all round. Bull bar. Kc lights, brake controller, auto meter tranny and volt pillar gauges

Towing a 3000lb trailer that’s not aerodynamic at all.

It does “ok” but more muscle would be nice.

I could pretty much swap it for a 2006 sequoia with 150k

What would u do?

I don't tow a lot.

I prefer the 4runner but I would guess that if you were towing all of the time, the 4.7 could be beneficial.

Sequoia is a tank, 1k lbs more, and not as agile for regular driving. Its a pretty thirsty engine too. That being said, it is cavernous inside if you have stuff to put in there and it is great for a highway vehicle.

Both are impressive vehicles and built well. Take the sequoia out for a spirited drive and see if you like how it rides.
 
The Sequoia is supposedly just as reliable/long lasting as the 4runner, just bigger (with all the pros and cons that includes).
My boss had an '07 with around 250k and he said he had barely any issues with it; mostly maintenance stuff. He's still have it if he wasn't t-boned a few years back. Now he has a 2013 Sequoia, also going strong with around 210k.

If you don't mind a vehicle that will be slightly harder to park and get slightly worse MPGs (I've read you can still push 20mpg if you baby it), then I say go for it.

The 06 Sequoia should also have a lot more interior creature comforts than the 4Runner, simply due to being newer.

Take off all the mods from your T4R that will change over (lights, gauges, etc) and install them on the Sequoia.

Try to keep both is option 1.

If not consider whether you tow enough (280hp vs 183) and/or haul enough folks/stuff inside (3rd seating for either 7 or 8 depending on middle row configuration) to push you towards the larger sequoia. Then think of the near to mid future (kids).

Yeah both are highly reliable, many shared parts. If you like 4wd, look for one of those sequoias. :cowboy:
 
Lmao, they get the same gas mileage. And it has the rolldown rear window. And I could be wrong but earlier ones actually have a 4WD lever. The downside is the name. It isn’t a 4Runner. It’s a little more “American”.
 
Try to have both!

I have a 2000 4runner and the wife has a 2002 sequoia we just picked up. The amount of room the sequoia has is fantastic! We really love the increased space for camping and storage. With just two adults and two dogs we found her old 06 4runner was just too small. We are also going to have kids. It is way more comfortable towing with it, since it is basically a Tundra after all. The sequoia is much more of a softroader and we never take it off road. I save all the fun offroad stuff for my 3rd gen!
 
Go for a 100 series, and keep the 4R. There are few good deals on 100 series in your area. Sequoia got more space compared to a LandCruiser but LC lasts a lot longer. Both share the same engine but LC is AWD/4WD. I have a 100 series year 2000 and it is doing about 1 mile more in MPG than the 4R in the city! On highway, LC is giving 16.5 MPG at 70 MPH about 1 mile less than 4R.
 
I doubt anyone will experience the "longevity difference" between a Sequoia and Land Cruiser. The Sequoia is running on what is basically a widened and lengthened 3rd Gen 4Runner chassis. Look at the front IFS and you'll notice why it's common to steal coils from its pickup brother to create a lift. Yeah, it wasn't built in a fancy Japanese plant like the 4Runner or LC, but this is still an era where US built Toyotas used nice materials. These are really good SUVs for the money.
 
No way would I have an auto 4Runner if I was towing a 3k lb trailer more than once every couple years! A manual would be a touch better, but still not something I would tow a 3k lb trailer with on any kind of regular basis.

Sequoia all day.
 
Looks like your looking for a fourth gen. You get a little more space with 4L or 4.7L engines that are both significantly more power then the 3.4L. Towing is also a bit easier due to the extra power!

Isn't that just absolutely bonkers that a 5000lb truck gets virtually the same MPG as our 3500lb truck? I mean, it makes sense when you realize it has a very healthy V8, but still.
I always talk about this with my brother who has an '06 100 series. And in '06, the LC received the VVTi technology which provides better economy.

I've been back and forth about buying one, but I just can't part ways with my 4Runner. Love it too much and spent a considerable amount of time fixing her. Ideal situation is to buy a 100 series in a few years and keep the 4Runner in storage.

But I digress. OP, get the Sequoia for towing, but try to avoid '01-'03 models. Transmission issues with them.
