4Runner performance

It was serious flouting yesterday in Toronto. We had 50mm of rain in 2 hours. Half of the city still closed. I had to drive at that time. I

i was also driving through that storm. i saw many cars pulled over too, some because of te rain, and some because their engines flooded. one in which was a cayenne s. but my 4runner didnt have a problem. i was wading through big puddles while others were re-routing and making u-turns.

suggestions for motorists:
if you dont think youre gonna make it through a road "lake" chances are, youre not gonna make it.

if you think its raining too hard to drive, pull over and have a coffee.

im not a professional driver by all means, but i know my limits.

btw, to restrict water from going into the intake, look up a bypass valve. i know aem makes one, its pretty much a foam and rubber filter in the intake.

Where you were driving? Did I see you? :) I drove in Woodbridge-Concord-North York-Richmond Hill. If you saw flying and swimming black 4Runner that was probably me ;):

Seriously, AEM makes bypass valve??? Never saw it. How it looks like? Some sort of tube or just insert for a tube?
 
There is no point in getting an aftermarket intake unless you are getting a snorkle for the sake of fording water. The OEM intake sits very high in the fenderwell as it is and any performance cone filter will only increase the chances of flooding the motor.

K&N Performance Intake fits exact the same place as OEM one. I was wondering of floating it at this point when water coming over the hood. In this situation it floats original and any other intakes, so I thought of ideas to find a solution (without snorkel) to prevent water coming to the engine.

Alex, i was driving from barrie-bradford-newmarket-north york... if i saw another black 4runner i would have noticed. chances are, we would have been the only ppl in the right lane plowing through puddles. hahaha...


anyways, about the intake. an idea i had was maybe a ram air like design....but with flexible tubing. such as the SPIRAL-FLEX INTAKE SYSTEM http://216.120.227.145/~racings//prod_spiralflex.php
i dont know how to do links and stuff. i dont know if the link will work. hahaha....

or a ram air kit from weapon r. you can place the intake in whatever position and you have a cover to cover it if you need. you can pretty much place the intake filter and tubing wherever you want. but i think a drop in filter would be just as if not more effective. hope i was of some help.

Have you extended your rear diff breather?


If not, you might want to change your rear diff fluid.

Another write-up.

Toyota uses a breather located on top of the rear diff. There is a chance water will get into the rear diff. That is why owners extend the breather.

I have the parts to extend my breather, just need the time to do it.

Technically speaking, it's a good idea to do it. However, i have never heard of anyone actually having problems with the breather valve being stuck open. You should do this modification IF you do frequent water crossing or mudding. If all you do is cross rain-drenched roads or small lakes once in a blue moon, then you probably do not need to do this mod.

As above, if you plan on taking deep rivers, then get a snorkel...nothing else will help you significantly.
 
A diff breather is something else to consider besides a intake/snorkel. I drive in areas prone to flooding. Cheap insurance if you plan to keep your truck a while. Plus it will prevent any vacuum on the axel seals.



Do many vehicles come with the stock breather extended, or on top like Toyota?
 
only a couple of vehicles come with extended breathers for the diffs (G-Wagon, Jeep Rubicon). All others come with the breather caps we have on the 4Runners (which for normal street use will work fine).

I wonder if all Jeeps have it extended or just the Wranglers. I know that all Wranglers have extensions...but, they are short extensions.

I believe that Land Rover Discovery Series II has axle breather tube extensions standard from factory. I am not sure about the newer Rovers (LR3, RR).
