4Runner photo game

Sweet! TV towers is just what I was thinking but 1,400'ers, wow, we only have 1,100'ers here.

Used to have one that was 1,576 here until last year. It was dismantled. Had not been in use since all the OTA TV stations went digital. It was the tallest structure in the world at the time it was built, and it was the first structure to surpass the Empire State Building in height.

Well, that brings back some [not so good] memories. I grew up a few miles from there, and remember when the first tower collapsed in 1971 (just as they were completing the platform on the top).

The first one I ever encountered was in Amidon, North Dakota, set up to look like a speed trap. We were going through on Highway 85 around 4:00am on the way to visit the state highpoint (White Butte), and were surprised to see a speed trap in this dinky town, especially at that time of day. My wife thought something looked funny about it, so we checked it out on our way back. I’ve watched for them ever since. Apparently, the Amidon car is quite famous, and people have been known to break in and dress up or do other things to the mannequin inside. :madgrin:

Seems to be quite a few of them in the mountain towns around here. Some are obviously fake, such as the one in Rand. The one in Twin Lakes is fairly convincing, though, and I’m sure it fakes out the tourists as well as some locals. It’s an old county patrol car, and it has the official badging along with a mannequin inside. Sometimes, the mannequin gets moved to the passenger seat. On closer inspection, the giveaways are peeling paint that looks like it’s been touched up with Rust-Oleum and 2004 license plate tags.

I’ve heard that Montezuma has one now too, but that it’s quality is about the same as the one in Rand. Montezuma's a strange place anyway.

Then there's an old patrol car in Empire, CO that I’d come to think was a phony. Empire used to be a notorious speed trap, but in recent years, the (aging) patrol car always seemed to be parked, unoccupied, in the same spot along the highway. Figured they could no longer afford their police force and just parked the patrol car, so I started to ignore it. Not too long ago, however, I was going through town and it had someone pulled over. :lookout: So, I guess you never know for sure.

The campus police used to do this as well, so I started carrying Dunkin Donut boxes and would put them on the hoods of the dummy cars and use a water bottle to weigh it down. :cheers:

There's a sweet plywood one on the Alaska Hwy in Teslin YT. Ironically there was a REAL cop sitting right behind the plywood one when we came through. I thought that was a pretty brilliant maneuver. There's also a neat older real car parked on 199 in O'Brien OR, not really a dummy car but it probably slows people down.

Challenge expired, time for a new one. Local landmark- this field of old bathtubs is near Oxford. It's a weird sight- there's nothing much on that stretch of highway but fields, and then suddenly... bathtubs. The guy that owns it did some work on an old cast-iron clawfoot tub at my parents' place- he basically rescues these ancient tubs and restores them nicely to their former glory and sells them for insane prices to folks outfitting period-correct homes. Place has made its way into a number of ESPN articles. Next Challenge- It's football season-

Day late and dollar short I know.....but I only go by there in the Runner every couple of months. Coulda got a shot in time but I was in the prius....It is been sitting in this spot (Capulin NM) for the at least the last 14 months and has not moved, thus fake.

Beer? Did someone say "beer"? Ok, here is my 4Runner with a few of my favorite cold weather beers. The Narwhal and Xocoveza are fantastic stouts. The Ovila Abbey Quad isn't made anymore but I have a few left. And the Westvleteren 12s are being cellared but I enjoy a couple each year between Christmas and New Years.

Next challenge: Another favorite cold weather activity. Your 4Runner with your favorite grillin' machine. It can be whatever kind of grill you like to burn edible things on.
