4Runner resale value?

Well the Smart forTwo requires premium gas so there's really no savings. Better buy a Fit, Yaris, Civic, or Corolla.

The 4Runner resale is better than the other SUVs in the same price range. There are people who buy a 4Runner because it's a 4Runner...like me. I didn't test drive it and I picked the color off the website.

4Runner Nation baby! LOL

I turned my 4Runner back in when its lease expired in January. I kept it in nearly perfect condition and still could not get squat for it on the open market. Thankfully, I had a "closed end" lease and was not having to worry about being upside-down.

Fuel was not approaching $4 per gallon six months ago, and I can still remember people commenting about how much it would cost to drive it.
:bash:

Anyway, I am enjoying my '08 Mustang GT -- on the rare occasion I drive it; and keep my '02 Sentra for commuter duty. Even on a bad day, it can break 30 miles per gallon on 'el cheapo' unleaded regular fuel.

I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too!!

Even Steven brought up one of the most valid points on safety in a crash. . . distance between you and the point of impact. And a smart car? Yeah sure if the other vehicles on the road were similar in size and weight. I'm 6'2" so where do you think my body is going in a smart car accident? Bone+soft tissue vs. metal+glass=bloody mess. Of course the money I save on gas can be applied to better health insurance, so. . .

Even Steven said:

He argues that the Smart car is very safe because it got a good rating for frontal and side crashes. That may be true, but have you ever looked at the back of one of those things? There's like 12 inches between the seatbacks and the rear of the car. Getting rear-ended by a truck or SUV looks like it would hurt something awful! No thanks, I'd rather pay a few bucks more at the gas station and keep my SUV---there's just too many big vehicles on the roads here in the USA.

You should research the Smart car. They have pictures that show the car after each test. I can promise you that there are several american made vehicles I would pass on and take my chances with the Smart car........... It did an amazing job.

Just thought I would share, cheers! :D

I'm totally relaxed little man, you've just made another enemy on this forum.

And by the way, I don't care about you in the least... you've been a loser poster who has alienated many on this forum.

Hahahaha.... little man. That's funny! An enemy on the forum... That's even more funny.

You win at the Internet, kid.

I actually saw the crash footage on television. They front and side impact looked decent, but they failed to show the rear impact and I'm not sure if they even tested it. There's just no way that it would do well in a rear collision with even an average 4-door sedan.

Look what he said:

Has anyone tried to sell their 4Runner lately, and run into this "SUVs are gas hogs" mentality out there, and not been able to get a good price?

I just sold my 2004 limited 4x4 v6. Got an offer for $20,000 from carmax and the dealer. I sold it to the dealer to get the tax break.
It was a titanium w/22k miles on it. Non JBL.

I dont know much about resale, but let me say this. Gas is old technology (it isnt even technology). Its a dinosaur fuel and is on the way out. Everyone should keep their runners and enjoy them now for the next year or 2 as much as they can because in a couple years gas will not be affordable atleast in any practical way and we will all be switching to some other type of fuel and therefore other type of vehicle. So basically what im saying is no one will be able to drive their 87 or their 92 or any of those classic toyotas. So my advice is either sell it now if you are just looking for money and dont care to have a toy. Or just keep driving it and accept the fact that you wont get anything for it in a couple years and probbaly wont even drive it yourself. Its depressing but those *******s in saudi arabia are just making record amounts of money and they obviously have no plan to stop raising gas prices. There is absolutely no reason behind it other than the fact that they are greedy bas****s and can make money of the destruction of peoples lives ands financial situations. I do not mean this in any racist way, but that is where the oil comes from. Im from canada and I just watched gas go up 11 cents a litre in one day. Gas is a joke. Ill be lucky if I can afford it for another year. Why dont they just make it 200 bucks a litre and save us the misconception of hope. This is all my opinion. But based on the last 10 years, gas will never go down, only up, and at a faster and faster rate.

1st off, let me say something that everyone should know. THIS IS THE INTERNET!!! No matter what someone say I NEVER take it to heart, nor do I insult back. I learn it is best to keep to your self, no need to stir up drama.

2nd, everyone is going to be in a different area, some have to commute very little, others alot, some may have 10k left, other may have paid off the 4Runner, bottom line, research your self and see what is better. Some may have differing opinions, but just let that be, state yours, end of story.

Sorry to come off all like Moderator and stuff, but I haven't posted in the longest time & I'm not liking what I see.

Back on topic.

In my case, I drive about 200 miles a week, get about 15 MPG, and have almost paid off my '95 4Runner.

If I sold it I would loose money, and the utility. If I kept it and bought another car, sub-$1000 it would take over 10 months to break even, plus then I'll owe for that.

For me I'll keep my Runner and steal our Celica before we sell it. (I know, why not keep the Celica? Because we can get $4,500+ for it fast, money we desperately need)

I have seen many people desperate to sell 10 - 15 MPG (City) vehicles, and at lower than usual prices. On the other hand small economical cars are selling faster. Unfortunately in these times of high gas prices we all have to figure out what is best for us. For example, my boss sold his old fullsize GM conversion van for a new Saturn Outlook. He figured out that on a per-month basis they will be paying about the same for gas & payment vs. just gas. A bonus was that they got a new car.

There is more to it than just that. Oil is traded on the U.S.market. The dollar is weak, that hurts. This stuff in the middle east is not helping. Oil went up $11 on friday. Because Israel said war with iran is definite. Does it chap my a** that the saudi's sell gas at $0.49 a gallon? Yes! But all this crap is affecting price. If a hurricane hits this year, then $200 a barrel will be here soon. along with $5-6.00 a galon. We better hope the hurricane season is weak. If we get out of the middle east prices will go down. If Israel would just shut up, prices will go down. If the dollar was worth more than boobs(t*ts) on a bull, prices would go down.

Touche my friend. Sucks when u live in Canada though cause our dollar is at a record high yet we still pay higher gas prices than ever.... Maybe when u guys get rid of bush things will brighten up.

The Smart car is actually quite safe. You can search YouTube for videos of it. It actually did pretty good against bigger cars, including the Mercedes S-class which weighs more than the 4runner. The Smart car is basically removable plastic around a solid steel shell consisting of high-tensile steel. The shell goes all around it...so, if it did well on a frontal crash, then it will likely do well in a rear crash. Everything on the Smart is designed to be a crush zone, including it's tires. (Hopefully, the passengers are not part of the crush zone!) :D

Would i ever buy the Smart?? Hell no. Too many compromises to practicality. Instead, i would rather get the 2009 Honda Fit or even the Scion xB.

Although the 4runner is a great SUV with good crash test results, if you guys really wanted a super safe SUV, then unibody is the way to go. Everything else being equal, a unibody is superior to a body-on-frame in a crash because the whole body serves as a crush zone. The unibody simply dissipates crash energy better.

All SUVs are taking a major hit in resale value. My G500 losts about $10K in recent months due to this hike in fuel prices. The 4runner is probably better, but i would not sell it unless you are going to get a Corolla/Civic. Otherwise, you will be wasting money in the long run.

BTW, i am really looking forward to seeing the '09 Fit:

I didn't mean to come across pissed. I was just stating. Yes Bush did f**k everything up. Glad he is leaving. Rememer this did happen back in the 70's. Oil shot up to $40 a barrel(high at that time), then retreated after a couple years back to $15. The economy is shot. Then Bush says"what recession" . If we need a president(ex-cliinton) who is getting a BJ under a desk, fine with me. At least he made good decission, and had us in a surplus for once. Not trillions in debt.

Hahaha thats funny, I totally agree though, at least Clinton was relatively stable.

The 70s oil embargo was before my time. Pops tell me that gas stations would be completely sold out of gas, restrictions on when you can fill up, lines down the street around the block, BUT prices didn't go up. It remained relatively constant. I was talking to my buddy about gas prices when cleaning out some old junk, 2/1/2005 I paid $2.099 for regular. He came across a receipt from 1998, $1.099 for regular. Prices didn't double for eight years, with this administration it nearly tripled during its tenure.

Yeah, recently, when Democrats spoke of raising taxes on gas to fund alternative fuels research, Bush balked at the $.50 cent price hike, which would easily take my area to $5/gallon. Quite frankly, I could give two $#!ts about $.50 when Bush done absolutely nothing about prices for the last eight years. As Clinton left office, I remember thinking "Damn, here comes $2/gallon gas." It was about $1.60 for regular and the days of everyone driving the biggest SUV out there.

I'm not surprised one bit either, because in 11/2006 reelection time, gas took a break and fell to $2.40-2.60 from $3.39 June of the same time. Maybe we'll see some temporarily relief when election time rolls around.

On the other hand, some say due to market correction like housing, oil will fall back to $65-75/barrel. I don't think that's likely because emerging nations like China and India will gobble up any excess supply that exists.

Disclaimer: Not trying to argue politics over this, just merely mentioning that the current administration doesn't care.

We are selling my ladies car and are on the waiting list for a White 09 Fit w/ Nav & ESC which is supposed to be available Fall 08. I like that is actually a fun car to drive versus the other econo-boxes. She will be getting the T4R during the week and I'll drive the Fit since I am cranking out 150-200 miles per day with work. There is a hybrid version of the fit due in early 09 so hopefully there will be some more info available about it before pulling the trigger.
Check out fitfreak.net for a lot of good info.

Somehow, i am now drawn to quirky little cars with tons of practicality. I would not get a hybrid for several reasons:

1. Fit is already super duper economical...probably gets 35 mpg on the highway or better.
2. Fit hybrid will likely cost more...at least $1000 more.
3. Honda hybrid thus far have NOT been known to be particularly smooth nor super efficient...certainly not as good as Toyota's breakthrough hybrid technology.
4. You gotta wonder about long term resale because Honda is apparently not going to pursue hybrid technology in the near future...they are working on diesels for their cars...see 2010 Acura TSX and Accords.
5. Hybrid brings with it more maintenance and long term hassle (once warranty goes out)...unless you plan to only keep while under warranty.
6. You have to drive a long time before you even realize the financial benefit of the hybrid...and i mean a long time given that the gas Fit is getting mid-upper 30's in MPG.
7. Finally, the packaging of the battery/charger may interfere with interior space, which kinda takes away much of the Fit's charm.

My only hope is that the '09 Fit will be quiet on the highway...Honda still has a way to go in matching Toyota's sound insulation based on the current models. If it is decently quiet, then i will be buying one for sure.
