4Runner resale value?

There will always be idiots doing idiotic things in the world...you can't account for everything these days! :D

Here is a good article on the Smart's safety features: http://www.getsmartny.com/smart-safety.aspx

And here is the official crash test report (ENCAP is equivalent to IIHS here in US): http://www.euroncap.com/tests/smart_fortwo_2007/303.aspx

Here is IIHS: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=632

Again, these crash tests won't tell you how the Smart will do against a heavier car, but YouTube has plenty of video of that already.

BTW, i would get the '09 Fit over the Smart anyday of the week!

As a motorcyclist I personally find the jabs at the smart car for being unsafe as a little asinine. If you get hit in the rear by a semi running at full clip in a T4R or any passenger car you are dead.

It seems like a great little car for someone living in the city or for hoping around the suburbs without having to make the sacrifices of riding a motorcycle. There is a reason why these cars have been all over the place in Europe the last several years.

"asinine"? you must know quite a bit more than any of us who see trauma every day then.....good call :FOS:

I have read most of this post, forgive if someone already posted this, I tuned out a bit with all the posturing posts or PP

I was an orthopedic trauma rep and stood in on trauma surgeries almost every day for 5 years. For the last 5 years I have covered arthroscopic orthopedic case. In college I worked in both the ER & OR as an attendant for 4 years. It's fair to say that I have seen my fair share of trauma.

I agree asinine wasn't the best word choice and was a little too harsh, but hearing people complaing about rather or not something is "safe" has long gotten old. If someone chooses to ride a bicycle, motorcycle, or drive a smart car that is their own personal decision in my opinion. The smart car seems to be a solid attempt at bridging the choice between an efficient, but less practical motorcycle, and a larger econo-box.

Although you're a "trauma RN," let's not lose focus that you may not know everything about crash design of a particular vehicle....

Then again, some of us work in ICUs...and some of us still think that there is a place for micro cars in the city limits. Remember, the Smart is for CITY FOLKS...it is NOT for the highways, nor for cross-country ventures. As noted above, the side and rear crash tests are pretty decent for the Smart...and those test results are fair game to compare with other cars.

then you would have been in a key position to evaluate injury with data which evaluated (MV) (MI) in it's relationship to size of vehicle vs the smart car and it's relative size. Even Steven's point will most likely be borne out in any analysis of that data if your position over the 5 years considered it?

Thanks for the "asanine" take back. appreciate it. no one likes name calling

I said the same thing, except keep it off the highway. Here in Chicago, you are only allowed to take a motorcycle on the highway if it is a certain size. A motorcycle can keep up with traffic. Smart car only goes 90(top speed) probally redlined. Will you drive it almost redlined for the whole trip? No.

Are you reading my posts or read up on the Smart?? It is NOT a highway car...it is for city only.

Wow, it's safer to be in the larger car during an auto collision...Brilliant! Too bad those Peterbilt's are so freaking expensive huh?
Lol, asinine is sounding better & better..

the statistics would be quite enlightening for the forum. If you want some assistance I can point you in the right direction. Should you just want to "label" people as name calling, please do it somewhere else. Something tells me in all of your education you did not learn much esp. how to treat others.....good luck with that.

So, you have statistics on the Smart?? I would like to see it since we're talking about the Smart car.

Thanks in advance.

Ha, please direct me to where I ""label" people as name calling" and didn't comment on their opinions about the safety of the smart car. This is a discussion forum afterall.

There is a big difference between attacking someone's position and attacking someone personally. Name calling would refer to the latter in my opinion, please try to learn the difference.

Your personal attacks on my education are entirely based on ignorance... good luck with that.
:)

Does the above take into account modern technology or crush zones?? Does the body structure have anything to do with it?? Yeah, body weight and mathematics are one thing, but the Smart (and other modern small wonders) are designed by supercomputers, using super strong metals not used previously, and usually crash-tested extensively before being release to the public. Since the Smart was designed by Mercedes, i am sure that it has undergone extensive crash testings...as is the case with the upcoming Honda Fit i am sure.

Please excuse my ingorance, but how did the discussion of the T4R resale value turned to the virtues (or lack thereof) of a Smart car and crash analysis

Also, the animosity on this forum is tremendously high, that includes regular members AND CHOSEN ONES (aka admins and mods). :(

It's a great forum, but all these personal jabs certainly ruin it.

Just my opinion...

in ANY crash mechanism, mechanism of injury combined with force of distribution = potential for penetration.(penetrating injuries being the most life threatening followed closely by vessel abdominal aorta injury being the second).

There are many variables. among the most important are:

size of vehicle
rate of speed
vehicle occupant size
vehicle weight
point of impact
intrusion score
position of occupant
restraints
secondary collisions (including impacts)
alcohol/drug involvement

and many others.

in addition when a vehicle is moving 60 mph and comes to a stop, the deceleration from 60 to end point 0 must be calculated if all vehicle size is the same. If one vehicle is larger, the actual 0-60 is greater as the smaller vehicle will actually be pushed backwards by the larger car incresing the threshold speed and doubling the penetration score (approx) and as such should be added to the other variables. It is possible that a smart car will protect an occupant in a particular crash as well but it would be the exception based upon variables which are brought to the data simply by it's size and the chances are very slim. Should you want to conduct an analysis the NTSB and NHSA has the data available for crunching, though I believe the smart car data would be available only from Europe or the Eastern Countries though additional variables would be needed. Good luck and keep us informed. And by all means Pro, if you know something about injuries (which I hear you do in your comments) please step up and enlighten us. I am sure we would all benefit from your training and experience............
