4Runner - Rust Control or Fight?

What I did

I own a 98 SR5 and it has virtually no rust on it, however, I did pull the bumpers etc off after I bought it and coated the insides, where the bumpers tend to rust. My thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/maintenance-detailing/115882-stopping-rust.html

I recently painted my rear end and in preparation I used a air grinder with a ROLOC med pad. This worked well to get the surface rust off. ROLOC is a system of grinding pads and abrasive pads which come in various sizes which have a plastic reverse thread knob which threads into a recesses into the pad on the grinder. Makes changing pads fast.

Looking at your picks------ I've seen much worse. I would be most concerned with frame rust. Good prep and por15 or a good frame paint would be in order. Prep will determine how long your remediation works.

Hi folks, I just bought my first 4Runner w/ rust. :ybrick:

I would like to see what I can do to ensure its longevity.

In the mean time, I bought a few cans of Fluid Film and coated whereever I saw rust.

Here's some photos...any recommendations on what I should do next?

I've searched for some threads about this and found a bunch of info, hence the fluid film.
I'm not that strong technically to do a-lot of this car work, so bear with me please as I ask more stupid questions.

Hoping for some guidance on the severity of the rust. I live in the Pacific Northwest.

Your frame doesn't look to bad. I used a needle gun, wire rope wheel and hammer to remove all the rust scale on mine. Then used Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer to cover it, either brush on or spray. Much cheaper then POR 15 or equivalent products, and is just as effective. Then covered it w/ Rustoleum Flat Black, couple coats. Depending how ambitious you are? I also cleaned the inside of the frame out w/ compressed air, and sprayed bar and chain oil, cut w/ a little diesel inside the frame through every hole I could find. Basically saturating the inside of the frame, Bar and chain seems to stick well and is cheap. I've seen others apply used motor oil, two stroke oil, or any other oil they had hanging around. Redneck rustproofing! But effective! Just sold my '04 Duramax last week that I had been doing this w/, the frame and body looked better then most 2012's. I live in Maine where they spray liquid calcium chloride, and salt on the roads all through the winter! The stuff is great for vehicles! Not at all!
