4runner safe?

hi eveyone this is my first post, im getting a car soon and all i want is a 4runner, but my parents are not on the same page with me they wanna get me a nice safe little car. they keep saying that 4runner rollover a lot its not a safe car and blah blah blah. so i was wondering if u guy can give me some info on how 4runner is a awesome safe car.

To be completely honest, the 4Runner is one of the best handling trucks I've ever driven. This is mostly comtributed to the fact that they come with pretty decent front and rear sway bars and independent front suspension.

Basically, if you end up rolling anything, it's your fault, not the truck's.
 
Well, you might point out that, if there is a collision between a 4Runner and a 'safe little car', I want to be the guy in the 4Runner. That said, driving a 4Runner takes better judgment than the little car requires. It's a lot heavier, has a higher center of gravity and just cannot be driven as aggressively as a small sedan without bad things happening.

I'd try and convince the 'rents that YOU are capable of driving the 4Runner responsibly and the size of it will help to protect you from the unpredictable crazies out there. I have 125,000 miles on mine and the car has always responded as well or even better than I expected. It ain't no stinkin' Explorer.

I would say if they are buying you a car suck it up and be a little more grateful. If you are buying this car with money you have earned at a real job then you have some room to discuss. I am not trying to be a pain or a jerk, but I went to school with a lot of kids who were given cars when they were 16 and complained they did not want them or they were not good enough.
 
its a safe car, it will oversteer before it rolls (and it takes some balls to try to oversteer this too) and if they are that worried about that get an 01-02 with the small wheels like LINY has/had. And dont comment about his parents buying him a car, thats not what he asked of us. And if a rebuttle is that my parents bought mine that is a negative, i paid in full.

I remember responding to a crash of a 2001 4runner over the edge of Buckhorn Summit it was a younger individual anyways it rolled and endo'd and what ever else it did on the way down and he simply climbed up the rescue line and walked around after the extrication. the car was demolished but left enough room for him to be "safe." So yes its a safe car under responsible care of a driver or in this case purely an accident.

Why would I rebut. I honestly do not care.
 
I was recently going to get rid of my 4Runner (sad) and I called my insurance company about quotes for another "small safe car" I was going to get, and the insurance lady said that car was going to cost more because it was a less safe car. So there is one avenue you can use to convince your parents that you should buy a 4Runner. Hope this helps.

i feel you i dont like those rich liitle jackasses getting whatever they want too, but iam actually paying for the car my parents just wont approve it. im not mod or anything just wanted u to know. :)
 
No offense to your parents at all but, are they friggin insane? 4Runner's one of the safest vehicles you can drive! It is jeeps that roll a lot. Just because somethings a truck or suv does not mean that it rolls easy....ROFL < no pun intended

Glad to hear it. You sound like a kid who will be going good places in your life. Do what th others mention and get the specs for a 4Runer and the safety specs for whatever car they recommend and compare. Also, find out insurance costs for each vehicle. This info. will be very telling. Sometimes insurers want to charge a huge amount for a 16 year old, but a good way to compare is to find out how many points they assign to the vehicle. The higher the points the more expensive to insure. The points are based of a lot of things like cost of vehicle, safety ratings, parts availability, etc.
 
The 4Runner has pretty good marks for safety. After 99, it had better air bags and pre-tensioners on the front safety belts. The rating for roll over is still pretty high, so I think that is a concern.

My son is in college and he uses the 2001 4Runner and after his freshman year he can have a car on campus and I plan on givng him my 2001 4Runner. One item that is on the 01 and 02 4Runner that I really like is the VSC (vehicle skid control). It won't prevent roll over, but it can help correct some mistakes made by the driver. So, if your serious about getting a 4Runner and are concerned about roll over in a 3rd generation model, my advice is to get a 01 or 02 4Runner.

That's ridiculous! Makes me glad to have a 4runner! I hope that truck had good insurance, since he wrecked 6 cars!

I have nothing but positive remarks for my 4runner. I've only had it a few months, but I love it. As someone pointed out, it's not a sports car, so you can't drive it like one, but it handles wonderfully nonetheless.

I second the opinion that you should look up insurance rates, crash ratings, etc. Make up a list of cars that your parent approve of and compare them to the 4runner.

IMO larger cars are safer in a crash. 4runner have a good rating and lots of mass. Smart car gets highest score in crash tests - Autos- msnbc.com this talks about the smart car. It gets good marks for a small car, but I certainly wouldn't want to hit a 4runner, or a semi, with it.

In 2008 I got a insurance quote for a new RAV4, 4 cyl base model and a new 4Runner SR5 V6. The 4Runner was a hundred dollars cheaper than the Rav4. I was a bit shocked by that.
