4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium vs. TRD Pro

Hmmm, I've owned 7 vehicles with factory sunroofs, including two 4runners, and have never had a leaky sunroof issue. You're doing something wrong.

Yep same here, had a ton of vehicles with sunroofs and never had an issue, even had a 91 MR2 with t-tops and those didn't leak. Only leak I ever had was when I forgot to close it but now the 4Runner warns you it's open before you get out.

And on a side note, I truly believe that the TRD Pro is an absolute waste of money over a TRD Off Road. You're paying a ton extra for cosmetics and suspension that you can easily add later for a fraction of the cost. Plus you can get a premium model that has a ton of options not available in the Pro. But that's just me.

Difference that can't be ignored is that you can sell the pro for what you paid a year or two later if need be. An off road with aftermarket parts I'm not so sure.

Until the next generation Pro. Then it's going to be the same as a TRD OR. Compare a TRD Pro 2nd gen Tacoma - there's no additional value compared to TRD Sport. Longer term the TRD OR will have a better resale compared to new value. The SR5 may have the best resale of all.

I would personally not even consider buying a used car with aftermarket suspension. But I only buy clean unmolested ones because I don't want anything to do with someone else's work. For me I would not give any additional value to a TRD Pro - but I probably would discount a 4runner like mine with Fox suspension, winch, sliders, etc. by $5k or more if I even looked at it. I want the one driven by a soccer mom. I'll put mine back to stock before I sell it. I've kept all the parts.

Until the next generation Pro.

Depending on what the 6th generation 4Runner will be, it's difficult to say how prices of the current Pro will do. The effects of introducing a new generation of a car really changes from model to model. When the third generation Range Rover came out, the second generation prices dropped significantly. When the Porsche introduced the new 991 GT3 to replace the 997 GT3, prices of the older 997 GT3 spiked because of the transaxle choice. The new model only offered an autoshifting gearbox and no longer offered a full manual. If the 6th generation 4Runner goes to a unibody, has an IRS, gets heavier/larger, or anything else that significantly changes the character of the T4R that we all love it may cause the 5th generation 4runner to rise in value. I hope Toyota maintains the 4Runner as the rugged offroader we know.

I don't think it matters for the TRD Pro. Even if they discontinue the 4Runner entirely. People who will pay extra for a TRD Pro are not buying for performance upgrades. If they think they are - they're just confused. It's primarily an appearance package. Appearance packages on non-late model vehicles very rarely offer any value on resale. It's not a better performance model. It's 2nd in the lineup for performance to the KDSS model. So the GT3 situation is very unlikely.

He is in Texas, can't get KDSS unless he drives outside of the gulf states region.

Just head over to Northwest Florida and they're everywhere.

I used to have a white TRD Pro and I hated that suspension so much that I traded it in for a Nissan GTR. That suspension was so soft and mushy on the road that it would drive me insane. That being said, the GTR might have been an overkill reaction. So, I'm getting a black TRD ORP in about a week.

Honestly, after I ordered the Pro and waited 8 months (thankfully 6 months of it was a deployment so it flew by) I felt ripped off. Everything about it felt cosmetic and non-functional. At this point, KDSS is a must and I know I'll be much happier.

I just bought a Non KDSS TRD OR Premium for my wife. We debated a ton about the pro. In the end, we decided if we wanted the look of the Pro. We can just get the parts. And the price different is still enough to get some very nice suspension. We're super happy with the decision. I do wonder if KDSS is a must tho. $1700 for it seemed a little steep and no one near us had one in stock.

I like the enhanced on road characteristics of KDSS. It's a good system that works really well from what I've read on the forums. I have yet to take ownership of the vehicle so I will have to report back on whether or not I actually notice the difference. Test drives never really test anything but the cars ability to make a big circle around the block.

I'm in luck that there are plenty of KDSS optioned ORP's in my area. 3 within driving distance to include a red, gray and black one. I would honestly buy an SR5 model and upgrade it before I'd ever buy a Pro again. It really is that unimpressive to me. Most guys on these forums upgrade everything anyway, and you end up throwing out or reselling (at deep discount) the parts that you're still paying for every time you make a car payment. If you want a skid plate then buy a REAL skid plate, not that aluminum can with TRD stamped on it. The front grill is cool I must admit. The suspension is decent off road but sucks on the road. The rims are too skinny and most shops won't install 285's (which I like) on them, and you can't get a sunroof. Oh, and all sunroofs don't leak. I've had plenty of cars with sunroofs. BMW sunroof motors do burnout, however. haha. Just replaced one of those.

I had a 15 SR5 and just traded it for a 17 Pro. I bought the Pro mainly because I wanted the Cement color but I also liked the potential of the higher resale relative to the purchase (I paid MSRP). I think some may argue that the resale won't hold as it is now but so far, it has been great.

If you are looking at a Barcelona, I think I would lean back toward the Off Road. If you are willing to forgo the cosmetic additions of the PRO, you can take the money you save and apply it to a new suspension and end up with a much more capable rig than the stock Pro.

Its really what you are after. There is some emotional aspects of driving a PRO as with any other really nice truck but that is not going to get you further down the trail. I love mine and it does exactly what i bought it for. You just have to decide whats best for you.

Get the Pro, but I strongly recommend going with a Pro only color. Otherwise, as others have said, you can simply make any Trail into a Pro, piece by piece, as you go along, whilst having a lower car payment (if financing). To me, it's hard to put a price on having an exclusive color. I was 80 percent driven to get the Pro so I could have Quicksand. The other 20 percent of me was tired of not getting what I really wanted (had an '07 Wrangler Sport (not Rubicon), had an '11 WRX (not STi)). I said, dammit, I'm getting the Pro or nothing!

I was looking at a pro but dealerships seemed unwilling to cut any sort of deal for one. On the other hand, they were very willing to make me a decent offer on an off-road premium. They swapped out the grille and valences for a a pro grille and valence for less than $500 so that's what I went with. plus i got a moonroof which is not offered on the pro.

^^^ Makes sense. I'd have a hard time paying a markup too. And I didn't. Got mine for $1500 under MSRP. I was thinking of the MSRP difference between a Trail Premium and a Pro when I said the color alone was worth the difference.

That’s funny. I was told 90 days for pro but an ‘18 off-road premium with the TRD wheels, grille, ventilated seats, running board all thrown in. Crazy day today at the dealership. Missing the suspension which I can do for a fraction of the cost for a lot less in the end. Super happy. Been playing with the 4wd and kdss all day. Plus I love the TRD seats

'18 Off-road premium has ventilated seats?
