If the 4runner had a V8 Hilux, like this one, then it would deserve to be called a TRD Pro.

Everyone wants to look like they have a PRO. But when I can buy a stage 2 ICON kit, NITTO G2 tires, and black out my Trail bumpers for less than a TRDP, its hard to see the appeal.
I happen to really love the TRD PRO and like what Toyota did with the 4runner, but if I am going to be doing serious off-roading whats the point.

As a pro owner I came to the realization that the Pro is nothing more than a Trail base model that is shipped from Japan and the wheels and struts are swapped out at US ports. I didn't get gouged by my dealer so it doesn't hurt that much. As one of the early buyers I didn't know about the "Clunk" issue until after a few months of driving in warm weather. (see thread about clunk), then winter came and after multiple complaints and issues opened, they are currently taking the stance that the sound is "Characteristic" of the suspension.
This said, I have decided to have a local shop lift the truck at this point and go to bigger sneakers.
In retrospect I would have ordered a Trail Premium and then had the work done. Since most of what makes the Pro's look good are aesthetic items that Toyota is more than glad to sell, I would have slapped them on too, so I actually think its a smart way to go if you like the look. I think all 4runners are pretty damn capable.

he's saying that the Pro owners that are douches are the ones that don't want to hear that they're Pro is the same as everyone elses 4Runner and doesnt make them special. we also like to poke fun at the people that paid MSRP or close to it because we know how to spend your money better than you do.

To be fair the TRD Pro is sort of special as its a limited bunch and comes in TRD Pro specific colors for the most part.
Other than color, suspension, wheels, interior and grille it's mostly the same I agree but I didn't want another trail as the wife already had one so the Pro was the only logical choice plus I liked the inferno color

it used to be limited, it might have model specific colors and appearance - but outside of the different valving and diameter of the bilsteins nothing is mechanically different. the argument has been made that the Trails are more competent offroad because of the KDSS availability and wider wheels.
Toyota has quietly agreed to keep the Pro as a continuing trim going forward. when 2017 rolls around, pros will be prevalent enough that a dealer won't be able to hold their pricing hostage on them anymore.
i don't know how long you messed around with Jeeps, but if you remember when the Rubicon TJ came out in 03 it was supposed to be a one year model run. Inca Gold rubicons were practically made out of gold for dealers. when 04 came around and the rubicon beat sales expectations and they kept building them the price came down a ton.
same thing happened with the Ford Raptors too. there are very few dealers left in the US that were selling Raptors for MSRP once the market was flooded with them.

Yea wife has KDSS and once I found out the current issues concerning lifting them we were put off by me getting another Trail and then I saw the TRD Pro in Inferno and found a great match. I'll swap out the lift and wheels soon but mostly I paid for the color. Sure I'm retarded but money wasn't an issue since I was putting 90% down for the most part after my Jeep trade but probably could've gotten a Trail Premium even on the Jeep. Just no Inferno on Trails.
I can see Pros being same price range as Trail Premiums at worst eventually especially if they keep doing exclusive colors on them.
Yea I remember that markup on the Rubicons. I don't see it being that big of a gap now for 4Runners but I can see them dropping 10 to 15% in price at some point especially if numbers produced are upped.

Yea I saw a few pics of the sand one and it def needs black accents like you mentioned. I'd have def blacked a few things out but personally I try to avoid anything military looking such as tan or green vehicles anymore as I see them all the time and don't need one on my off time

Hmm, black handles would be cool, and likely an easy swap if you get the OEM parts and just paint 'em glossy or matte black. I'm doing bushwacker flares the minute they come out. THE...MINUTE!
But let me clarify my point earlier, I love the Inferno color, not as much as the FJC TT 'Cement' color, but Inferno is great. The problem I have with a lot of TRD Pro owners is they think they bought some unicorn in terms of performance, when it's just a TEP with some facia parts and an okay suspension package. There's really nothing unique even with my 4runner build that a bunch of money couldn't achieve as well.
I think the TRD Pro is a great trim because it's brought in a lot of non-4Runners who now have 4Runners, which keeps the platform viable and doing well for Toyota, which keeps the 5th gen popular for upgraded parts. But I've met more owners who seem to have an attitude or are mis-informed, than other folks.
Again it's JUST a trim package, y'all.

Don't ask dealers anything about any 4Runner as they have no idea what they're talking about. Same applies for Jeeps as my dealer when I purchased my Rubicon Unlimited told me this thing will never ever get stuck lol. Guess he never heard of Independence Trail or Carnage Canyon

I think he said 29 degrees, so at least he wasn't completely chasing squirrels... but that still doesn't seem right, it should at least be 33-35ish for a non-limited.
I'd love to buy one the way the TRD Pros come to the states with the steel wheels and none of the bolt-on crap and just drive it straight into a lift and install my own stuff--keep the steelies, they're cool.
...BTW, if you bury the tires to the top in sand... you're not going anywhere.
