4runner TRD Pro

I thought I'd give an update on my new TRD Pro. I've put about a hundred miles on it since I picked it up on Friday. I had never even driven a 4Runner before I picked mine up on Friday and I couldn't be happier with my decision to get the TRD Pro. The suspension works great. The ride is very smooth. It has a bit of nose dive under heavy braking, but I'm used to that as my Ford Raptor did the same thing. The interior is very quiet with minimal tire noise. It feels more like I'm driving a luxury SUV instead of an off-road oriented SUV. I'm not too concerned about fuel mileage but so far the display is showing that I'm averaging 16 mpg. I'm going to try and get out to the desert in the next month and see how it works in the dirt.

Look great! It should be easier to park than the Raptor eh The trip to the gas station should be less painful too. I can't wait for mine.

Yes, definitely easier to park than the Raptor. The wife and I didn't take the Raptor certain places because we knew it wouldn't fit in the parking spaces. Filling up will be a lot easier on the wallet.

We were the same way. We wouldn't take my Raptor certain places because we knew it would be impossible to park. That combined with the gas and overall expense was enough for me to sell it. Hopefully the TRD Pro gives the plush comfortable and quite ride on the road, but also the off road prowess to explore fun areas. Add in Toyota reliability and resale, better gas mileage, and easier maneuverability and I'm hoping we have a winner.

Here's the bottom line -

It's a bummer when every published picture of the thing is different than when you get yr hands on it. Now, granted that hasn't happened yet. I may be perfectly happy with it. But it's a little disconcerting.

I think that's the major problem with the TRDP. The pre-production models were based off a TE-P and now we're seeing that the production model is based off the base Trail. Softex seats, sunroof, side mirror signals, and KDSS. Since then we've seen the sunroof, side mirror signals, and KDSS dropped while the only remaining TEP like feature is the softex seats. That and now from the pictures it looks like the TRDP is only sitting 1" higher in the front. From that last picture posted the truck doesn't even appear level or even that much different than stock in terms of stance. The more and more we found out about the TRDP the more features it seems to drop. I'm sure it'll still sell like hot cakes but it's disappointing to know that the pre-production model had a lot more features than what the consumer will be getting.

Looking at the pre-production model, it looked like a good deal for 44k because it was a TEP and was lifted.

44k for a suspension kit that doesn't lift the truck and some badges is a goddamn ripoff.

To be fair, you have no idea what I've test driven. You have no idea what arrangements or plans I have in terms of the down payment should I not like the truck. And I simply have no clue where yr getting a $50K figure from.

You are still buying a premium, high demand model, with a base price of $41,995, sales tax, licensing, dealer charges, extended warranty, any other options you get, yeah $50 grand or at least closer to 50k than to 40k. No assumption there, I may be 3-5k off depending on who you know but regardless still a big chunk of change no matter how you look at it.

Like I said I am not trying to be a dick, just going by what I have read that you have written throughout this thread. I do hope you enjoy it, seriously I do, just saying, you agreed to buy something expensive that barely hit the market, without seeing it, driving it, smelling the interior. I think that is quite a bit of a gamble that's all.

Yeah, why they would set the preproduction model one way and the production another, I don't understand. For those of us buying sight unseen based on preproduction specs that feels like a bit of bait and switch.

Bait and switch is not even close. Toyota developed a spec list and that is what it will be. The pre-production images and vids were of concept vehicles. Ever seen one before at a car show? Usually not even close to the real vehicle. Actually I think the TRD Pro is closer to the concept than most.

If the production model is true to all the published specs, yr absolutely correct. If that front end isn't at all lifted on the other hand.....

That front end doesn't look any higher to me on the production models that have been posted in this thread.

Did you take a tape measure to it? You have some wiz bang scalable software that will convert images to dimensions?

It sounds to me like you got all hot and bothered over the hype and pictures of the concept vehicles. Now that all the details are coming out and its not exactly like the concept you are disappointed. Nothing wrong with that but don't blame Toyota. They didn't publish exactly what they were going to sell until recently. You just had much loftier expectations apparently. I hear Jeep has some good stuff...

KDSS (was slightly bummed, but have faith that the TRDP suspension system was engineered to perform as good or better than KDSS)

front end lift (quite a bit more bummed, although if it's simply a matter of adjusting the coilovers to the highest position that's not terrible)

Yes, Jeep has good stuff. I've been researching them for years but guess what, they have their major problems as of late. DEF issues, electronic issues, suspension issues, etc...
IMO I think they're trying to be too luxurious with their Grand Cherokees and with that technology they are having issues. I drive a Grand Cherokee now and was waiting for their diesel to come out but that's an extra 5K over the V6 plus they've had problems.

Lots of people report that their DEF wasn't regenerating and their vehicle goes into limp mode or just shuts down. Damn epa regulations!

here are the things that are different -

sunroof (i couldn't care less)

define as good or better. Since springs and shocks work in a different way than swaybars they will never be able to replicate the performance of each other. They work together for different aspects of the car's handling on and off road.

Thanks for this. I'd really like to hear from someone who has driven other 4runners, especially one with KDSS.

As for jrandom's post about people buying a TRDP sight unseen, I think most of us here asking for information are doing that *because* we haven't been able to drive one. We are well aware of the pitfalls and are doing pretty much the only homework available to us at this point. Personally speaking, I fully intend to drive one before I take it home with me, and I made sure my deposit was fully refundable.

As far a "trying to being a dick", I'm pretty sure he wasn't. At the same time, I've learned from experience that anytime I share an opinion on the internet, inevitably someone out there will think I'm one.

A couple things -

I'm trying to make peace with you. I really don't have the time, energy, or desire to have an Internet flame war. So what do you say?

And, I really don't feel obligated to respond to each assumption and the implied insults there within. In the spirit of my first point above, what's the point?

Just a little disappointed in the front end on the production model. I'm not the only one.

And one more comment - every single person that has bought a TRDP thus far and most people that ever do buy one will be doing so sight unseen. That's the nature of a special order vehicle. They don't typically have them just sitting around on the lot.

I've been in contact with a couple dealers (Minnesota) who initially didn't have any idea of what I was talking about but that seems to be quite typical. I finally had them figure out if we could order one- I have 2 dealers saying yes we can and one hasn't responded yet. The one who is really checking on it said it would be around late Dec/early Jan. No dealership here has yet to see one in person but one said that they should have one next week.

By the way, I'm also getting Inferno.

Since you've seen the Inferno in person, would you say it's more like a hemi-orange or a burnt orange? From most pics I've seen it looks more like hemi-orange than burnt. Your thoughts?

Easy Andy - Sorry man I was out of town beginning last Thursday and have been slammed busy todoy, so unfortunately I don't have any new info on a part number for the TRDP grille, but yes very positive it is a cover/ insert. As soon as I can confirm and get a part number I'll be happy to share, but that info is rather delicate and sometimes hard to get. Also, you're going to probably need a TRDP VIN to order. You could even probably just get a VIN (if someone here were to offer up theirs) and go to the dealer or a bodyshop.

The White looks awesome with the 2013 TE running boards. I was set on N-Fab, but may now have a change of heart!

444 - I should be able to order mine here within the next couple of weeks, so I will ask our Allocation Dept. if they have an expected delivery date on Inferno. And as far as the color, that's tough. I'm familiar with Burnt Orange and Hemi Orange (previous SRT owner), the color is totally different. It does totally depend on the light that hits it, but ranges from a Dreamsicle orange to a Burnt Orange. Very unique color.
