So this is actually my first post on the forums. I'm seriously considering buying a TRD Pro 4runner and was wondering how it works special ordering from a dealer. The only car I've ever owned is an '89 Land Cruiser, so I'm not too familiar with how negotiations go with a special order. Do you actually have wiggle room on the pricing? Please pardon my naivete in the matter.
(We have a baby on the way, so I've been "encouraged" to sell the LC and get something with airbags.

Keep the 70!!! Great rigs. Use the 4Runner with the fam. I have a 80 and it's a beast. Love it. You'll miss the tank like simplicity, but will love the drive. Just have to get used to the smaller windows and difference in feel and turning radius (at least compared to an 80). I never had a 70. Welcome!
We'd have to sell it in order to have the money for a down payment on the 4runner, so it seems that the option of keeping it is out.
My FJ62 has been my first and only car so it's just extra painful!

Honestly I am prepared to pay sticker. My dealer told me that because of their limited run there will not be discounts, so the more I can get for my 09 Tacoma the better.

Clean rig. Love it. I understand, but honestly it probably is about as safe for a kid as a new rig with airbags. Not trying to get into a debate, just my opinion. My own plan is that my oldest who will be driving soon, will learn and drive the 80. I have 4 kids and have never felt in danger having them in a built rig like that. You should be able to get a good amount for the FJ if you list it over on Mud. Lots of folks appreciating clean rigs.

Well you need to do whatcha gotta do to keep the family safe. So that means if you gotta get with the new technology and safety. Then sell/trade away and don't look back.

see if the dealer will give you truecar.com pricing for a 2015 TRD Pro. That is your best bet. Rumor is only 900 is going to be made for 2015. So if said dealer says no, start calling up other dealers until one says yes.
On a separate note, I wonder how much the TRD Pro suspension will cost... Will it be worth it over the 5100 bilsteins?

I'm hearing mine should come in around the 13th or so. Getting' stoked!
I think there are at least four flavors of "special orders" with a dealer. Since they are anxious to sell a car to you immediately, they sometimes won't even acknowledge all of the options:
a) The dealer has a vehicle on the way in their own allocation and are willing to reserve it for you based upon a negotiated price/deposit.
b) If you are only particular about a couple of things (e.g. exterior color, trim level, model) they will take your deposit and find the "closest thing" at another nearby dealer. This gets a vehicle fast, but you may wind up with options you don't want and you also have little negotiating leverage.
c) If you are more particular, they will try to find one in another dealer's allocation that hasn't reached port yet. If there is a match, they can swap vehicles with that dealer and it will be just as if it were in your dealer's allocation. This gives you the ability to specify the port installed options you want and also provides more leverage in negotiating the price relative to dealer invoice.
d) A true factory order. This is where your dealer orders exactly what you want from the factory and it may arrive in 2 to 4 months. I believe that many dealers resist this approach as you may wish to equip the vehicle with options that make it harder to sell to others and many buyers probably fall through and wind up buying another vehicle instead because they are tired of waiting.
I would be interested in hearing other perspectives on this, especially from those of you who may have worked as "insiders" at a dealership. With respect to special models such as the TRDPro, your dealer may not realistically have any of these options (other than "a" for one or two units), at least for the first part of the 2015 model year. Fast forward to 2016 and beyond, and the TRDPro may have the same availability as any other vehicle.

I dont know them playing dumb can work in your favor since you can get the TE NOW and pay ~$6000 less for the TE compared to PRO

I agree with you. It's a lot of money if I pay full retail. I'm checking to see what the best pricing I can get is. If it's not good enough, then I'll get a TEP

Given the limited availability I'm betting it's going to a pretty hot commodity. You're going to pay either MSRP or real close to it. Doubt the dealers will give you much of a deal on them.
