I have seen the skid plate in person. They didn't build in gaps on the sides to allow for the KDSS sway bar arms to reach the lower A-arms. If you compare the skids from 4Runners with KDSS to a 4Runner without KDSS and the new skid (like some of the photos of the TRD Pro), you can see there is a pretty big different in the sides of the skid.

Why they didn't make the skid compatible with KDSS who flippin knows... The TRD guys I talked really didn't have a good answer as to why it was not. One of them suspected that it was due to the fact that the gaps could create weak points causing the skid to be less effective since Toyota is touting this skid as the most legitimate skid plate that they have ever built.

I've been anxiously awaiting word on the TRD Pro, as it was going to be the reason for me to bite the bullet and join the 4Runner family. After getting the run-around by my dealer ("we don't know yet about the TRD Pro.... BUT check out this TE on our lot!") - I emailed Toyota Canada directly:

Currently, there are no plans to add the TRD Pro 4Runner to the Toyota Canada line-up.

We would like to explain that market trends are closely studied to give us a better idea of what vehicles are in demand. Then based on our findings, our Product Planning department is able to choose those vehicles that best suit the needs of the buying public. We recognize, of course, that these choices may not meet the needs and fulfill the desires of all potential customers.

Not necessarily. That early truck was prototype. The later trucks were probably build as an early trial on the actual process and tooling from the vendor. Big, big difference.

I'm going in to see the dealer tomorrow and see what the numbers are like trading in my 14' TEP. I like the advantage of having the TRD Pro fitted with all the off-road parts that I will need and won't have to mod much if at all (just my preference) and also being warranted by Toyota is a big plus. If too costly I will just stick with my TEP which I love and take the slow approach to eventually get it lifted etc. Will let you know how it turns out.

Exactly my question as well...

There was another great close up photo of the KDSS compatible skid plate on an inferno TRD Pro 4Runner that I had seen on a autoblog a couple of months back, that I can't seem to find now. In that close up photo it was obvious that the skid plate had been machined to fit the KDSS equipped 4Runner. Machined as in the gaps were cut in after the fact. Seems to me like they may not have a "from the factory" KDSS compatible skid plate.

All that said, the TRD guys that I talked with said that the early TRD Pro 4Runner prototypes were literally Trail Edition 4Runners painted with the new colors that they slapped on all the TRD Pro stuff including skids and suspension. Oh and floor mats too! haha. I suspect that some of these photos that we see of the TRD Pro 4Runners on the web that have KDSS are a KDSS equipped TE that became a TRD Pro. As such, they may have just taken the new TRD skid plate and modified it to fit. Just my theory. :tinfoil3:

i wouldn't say they have tooled up to make KDSS skid plates. Tooling for mass production is $$$$ (even if it's just low volume TRD stuff). They probably prototyped one or two pieces for show vehicles.

Pretty sure anything is possible with enough money, time, and the right tools. I am not a fabrication guy but I know plenty of guys who fab with raw and forged aluminum all the time. Based on the things I have seen them do it would seem the possibilities are endless. If I were you I'd buy one of the TRD skids, take it to a fab shop near you that works with aluminum and see what they think. Worst case scenario they say it can't be done for some reason and then you re-sell the skid here for $50 less than retail + tax and you aren't out a bunch of cash.

I'm curious what "off-road parts" come on a TRD Pro that don't come on your 2014 TEP?... I mean, it seems like all cosmetics to me (badgding, wheels, seats, woohoo aluminum skids)... and the one functional part you can buy a lot cheaper (suspension).. because unless your dad owns the dealer you're gonna lose your a$$ on a trade in despite the great resale value of the 4Runner.. the dealer has to make money on your trade, so I wouldn't expect more than 30 for your TEP on trade... they'll list it for 35, sell it for 33-34K after neogitations and still make some coin...
Just me I'd say keep your 14 TEP , it's freaking awesome! and not worth the thousands you'll lose in the transaction.
