4runner TRD Pro

Pretty sure anything is possible with enough money, time, and the right tools. I am not a fabrication guy but I know plenty of guys who fab with raw and forged aluminum all the time. Based on the things I have seen them do it would seem the possibilities are endless. If I were you I'd buy one of the TRD skids, take it to a fab shop near you that works with aluminum and see what they think. Worst case scenario they say it can't be done for some reason and then you re-sell the skid here for $50 less than retail + tax and you aren't out a bunch of cash.

This ^

I don't see any reason one couldn't modify the skid for the KDSS with the proper tools, its just aluminum!

Yea agreed. I would love to see someone pull it off as well. It does seem to be easy but I do not claim to be an expert.

this is crazy. i would think it would fit with zero issues. i was looking to get this skid plate as well. gonna do alittle more research... ;-)

Clearance is lower on the KDSS 4Runners. BudBuilt & Shrockworks both build different skids for KDSS vs non-KDSS equipped vehicles. KDSS front skids sit lower to protect the piston holding the swaybar.

OK, this is good data ALT4R, I wasn't aware of the piston/clearance issues.

So, it may not be as simple as cutting the skid for a KDSS equipped T4R.

We need more data......

I'm curious what "off-road parts" come on a TRD Pro that don't come on your 2014 TEP?... I mean, it seems like all cosmetics to me (badgding, wheels, seats, woohoo aluminum skids)... and the one functional part you can buy a lot cheaper (suspension).. because unless your dad owns the dealer you're gonna lose your a$$ on a trade in despite the great resale value of the 4Runner.. the dealer has to make money on your trade, so I wouldn't expect more than 30 for your TEP on trade... they'll list it for 35, sell it for 33-34K after neogitations and still make some coin...
Just me I'd say keep your 14 TEP , it's freaking awesome! and not worth the thousands you'll lose in the transaction.

NuclearN8: Good points....you pointed out some things I didn't think about...greatly appreciated. :)

Well, depending on shipping time I'll let you guys know soon, cause I just bought the skid plate.

I'll make a new thread if I'm the first one by the time I get it and have time to play around.

$42K starting? I got my Trail for $37K. That gives me $5K to play with. $1K OME suspension (any duty), $1K for full under body armor, $1K Tires, $1(.2?)K ARB front bumper, $500 sliders. Take the extra $500 plus the fact that many of these item can be had for less than $1k and put that towards installation. Now I have beast of a vehicle for the same price. Obviously people could spend this cash however they wanted, but I feel like the pricing that I am seeing makes the TRD Pro climb an insurmountable mountain, value-wise. However, if orange is your thing, then go for it! Spend any hard earned cash however you like, I just like to stretch mine a bit where I can..(beer is non-negotiable)

correct me if im wrong but i thought all the trd pro runner comes with KDSS? since my trail is equipped with kdss, it should work right?

You know, you are right. I'll tell my friends at TMS to not bother. I'll tell them to kill the TE, too, because a base SR5 is probably cheaper to build up. Then again, you could buy a used 4Runner for a lot cheaper than new and build an amazing off-roader on a 4th gen for the fraction of a new SR5. Maybe just cancel the whole 4Runner program because the value just isn't there versus a used 4th gen, GX, or LC.

Sorry, I'm just getting a little short fused with the constant talk that the Pro is a waste of money largely from people that just bought a '14. I'm glad they are making it and I hope it sells well because that means I still might be able to buy a 4Runner some day after I've gotten this sports car thing out of my system. If this does well, especially to the people who aren't already on this site, it improves the odds of a factory ready off-roader sticking around in the future. BTW, even if you can build your truck for cheaper, I'm not paying a penny more than a stock TE would go for. Modded trucks are worth less than stock trucks because I honestly don't trust most people to do a good job on aftermarket installs.

So how's your warranty with all those mods?

How about efficiency? Still gonna get 20 mpg?

Best of all, how about when you go to trade it or sell it? That TRD will still be worth about 80% of the $42K or $34K after 3 years. Let's look at your $37K TE Build:
$37K + $5K worth of mods = $42K right?
Problem is after 3 years your TE that you have $42K invested in is only worth $30K because very few pay for private mods unless they come from a place like ICON. Now, you could pull all that stuff off and sell it for maybe 1/4 of what it's worth (tires worn, wheels scraped, etc) so now you are up to $30K +$1.25K = $31.25K.

So mine is worth $34K and yours is worth around $31K for a difference of $3K. That's a lot of beer money. You speak of value in your post but you need to take some of the intangibles into account too.

Last thing for those who are miffed that KDSS is not offered on the TRD PRO:
Did you ever consider that KDSS might not be needed with this suspension package? That on road cornering and off road articulation might be as good as the current TE's with KDSS? That's what I am thinking.

What 1engineer said. I couldn't agree more. If your hobby is modding go for it but realize how it affects or fails to affect the value of your truck. Very few will pay for those mods when they buy the truck off you years down the road.

I'm thinking the same thing on the KDSS not being needed. Like to see one worked over
in a video on a decent trail. Not the stuff they have been showing...

KDSS is an onroad system. It allows the 4Runner to have larger sway bars than the standard model without those swaybars negatively affecting articulation. I think that with the suspension travel that the Pro supposedly gains, the KDSS caused more problems off-road than advantages onroad so they decided to pitch it out on the Pro model.

The dealer offered me Fleet pricing for the TRD pro (so approx 2500 below MSRP) when I had my name against one. Mind you my company buys 200+ lexus and toyotas from this particular dealer in 1/2 a year.

Unfortunately my wife had zero interest in a TRD Pro and insisted that it had to be a limited or nothing. So I gave up my spot for a white TRD Pro.
