Had a 2008 and a 2013 Tacoma. Both were double cab long beds so should have been the heaviest with the least impressive mileage of Tacoma family. However, I was getting around 20 miles per gallon in both of these averaged between city and highway use and this is right within the claims by Toyota.
I really, really love this 4Runner and traded in my 13 Tacoma for it. My only issue is....Gas mileage sucks. I do not know how you guys are getting 19+ mpg as I have read. I am about to turn 2000 miles on mine and I am still averaging 14.8 mpg with a mixture of city and highway. This is not even close to the estimated 17 to 21. With the larger 19 gallon tank I was looking forward to getting 360 or so miles per tank versus the 320 or so in my 17 gallon Tacoma. But instead...I am getting around 290. This sucks.
This is basically the same engine as my Tacoma and weight is negligible, but this difference is ridiculous. Older V8 engines on larger SUV's get better than this. I will hang on a bit longer and hope that it breaks in or gets better, but had I known this, it may have changed my decision.
