4runner TRD Pro

OK...
Not trying to butt heads and I have learned something now. I look forward to Spring/Summer months to check MPG.

My snipping was related to talking about gas mileage and then we get a random reply about winter gas. Rather than mention "it may be because of winter gas" in which case I would have said "what the hell is that" and looked it up, but instead we get:

"Guys, do a bit of research please! I have authored several posts on winter gas"

So again, because I am not familiar with this, I did not relate my gas mileage versus my Tacoma, to something I had not heard of before. Therefore, the thought of googling "winter gas" never crossed my mind.

In the future I will exhaust all search options for stuff I am not aware of, which will be difficult, or I will ask on here "What should I search for before I inquire of something" to try and avoid fallout.

Also this post is relevant. Looks like we all agree on the winter gas thing being the reason for decreased mileage but what about the difference in [MENTION=117561]drsus[/MENTION] trucks running the same gas at the same time period? (Unless this goes back to the weight issue)

well, my case throws a wrench into it because my tacoma had a leer camper on it that weigh about 200lbs, almost negating any (considerable) weight difference between them i think? but it only adds to the WTF element of why the 4runner consumes so much more than a tacoma. that why i was confused anyway. for some reason i had in my head that because this was a "reworked" version of my tacoma engine that it would have SOME MPG gains...but it not only has no gain, it has a significant loss. again...were not talking a difference that anyone is gonna get rich off of at the end of the year from, but its still curiosity.

Gasoline blends, especially winter and summer blends, are mandated by both the state and federal government. It does not matter where you are or if it snows you get both blends depending on the time of year. Actually SoCal gets it early. Again, as stated in my first post, do some research.
You are making it really hard to help when all you want to do is argue with no facts to back it up. Do you know what winter blend is or why ot is used? Hint: nothing to do with snow.

still..and i hate sounding like I'm just dragging an argument, but its the truth.. doesn't change the fact that my tacoma regularly got 19-20 all year round for 3 years. if it had dropped to 15 or even 17! i would've had a red flag go off in my head and thought something was wrong...checked my tire pressure or something. Im of the school that unusual fuel consumption is a cars thermometer, or fever. its a sign of a problem, so i keep an eye on it from tank to tank, always reset my trip

so, winter gas or not, it did not affect the tacoma, that i noticed. if my 4runner is on winter gas now maybe it is affecting it... why it would affect this truck and not the tacoma maybe thats something you know more about than me, but I'm saying winter gas is not an issue, at least not with my cars here in SoCal' ...that includes my wife' 6 year old subaru outback (20mpg year round ) and the 10 years I've owned my '99 discovery ( 10-11mpg year round.)

so why is this 4runner so much thirstier? simple fuel mapping from toyota to change its characteristics?

My 2010 4WD 4Runner SR5 could return 22mpg pretty easily. I didn't let the truck idle to warm up, I refuse to use drivethroughs, and I follow the speed limit. That last one is a biggy. If you are driving 75 everywhere, you are pretty well out of the EPA test cycle. Once you are driving outside the test cycle, all bets are off. The aero of the Pro could be worse, you could be feeling the impact of those big knobby tires (especially if your Taco was a TRD sport or SR5 rather than something with oversized knobbies.

IMO, this is a pretty aggressive package compared to the stock SR5 package. The EPA doesn't require you to retest for fuel economy if the engine and chassis is unchanged. My old Prius v Five had 17" wheels and 215 width tires versus the the 195 width tires on 15" wheels of the Two and Three trims. The EPA rating was the same but self reporting showed that the Two and Three trim guys could pretty easily beat the 42mpg rating -- a lot were pushing 45 to 48mpg regularly -- and most of us Five trim owners were in the 40 range. Tires make a considerable difference. My guess is that Toyota doesn't bother to retest every trim/package on the Japan built vehicles (Prius, 4Runner, Yaris, etc) while the U.S. built vehicles (Camry, Corolla, etc) get rerated for every variation. The Camry hybrid XLE has a different rating than the Camry hybrid LE. The real highway rating of the Pro is probably around 20mpg... Which was the best I could get in my 2010 SR5 after I replaced my Bridgestones with Goodyear Wrangler A/Ts.

There have been a few available in my area but none were the right color or were missing the options I was looking for, better to wait to get what you want. Can't wait for it to arrive, but I'll miss my CrewMax.

I put a deposit down on a white TRD Pro at the beginning of December and am looking at the same time frame as you. Really looking forward to it!

My taco had a shell (200lbs) and Goodyear DuraTracs which are essential more than an a/t tire a slightly less than mud terrain tire. Knobby.
The TRD has the nittos which are nowhere as aggressive as DuraTracs.
My guess right now is fuel mapping mainly, and then to some extend the fact that the front end of the 4runner is a bit higher off the ground from asphalt to lower dam (about 2" when I had them parked next to each other at dealer) and less aero than The taco?

Whatever you say. You have your own tiny experience. Do a bit of searching for thousands of cases where mpg decreases in winter in all areas of the US.

ok, i agree thats MPG does change in winter time, I'm with you 100%..regardless of my numbers

...Is summer blend going to yield everyone else but me (since my numbers doesn't count) a 4mpg gain?


the argument is not (anymore) wether or not winter blend affects mpg, the argument is why the TRD is so far lower than tacoma. you say winter blend is it. I only have a hard time believing that since the only thing i know, my numbers. Would you at least agree that if my tacoma didn't change much, my 4runner probably won't? and my tacoma got 19-20 and my 4runner gets 14-15. That leaves a 4-5mpg gap, in my tiny experience. I'm just curious why such difference. Its not the weight (not enough anyway), certainly not the tires.

thats it! forget about winter gas an all that. this time of year my tacoma was getting 19mpg, and from the sounds of it so was everyone else that owns or owned one.
And here no one seems to be getting above 15mps...Is summer blend going to yield 4mpg gain? thad be incredible if thats the case
Do me a favor: Show me your Tacoma mpg numbers where you documented by fill up for a complete year. When you do that we will talk because several here includong me document their numbers.

I never said four mpg, I said around 10%. That would equate to about 1-2 mpg and bring your 15 mpg city up to around 17 mpg.

Look, believe what you want. i gave you a reasonable explanation on why you get bad mileage this time of year. You disagree which is fine but show me why I should believe you by presenting the numbers. Now if you tell me you just know and would have sensed a drop in mpg then I will call BS and tell you to this from my world:
"If it's not measured by data then it does not exist."
 
I am not sure how accurate the MPG gauge is on my TRDP but I am getting about:

17-19 MPG on the Hwy
13-16 MPG in the city

Yesterday I drive 135 miles mixed highway and city and had a combined average of 15.52MPG using 8.7 gallons of 93 octane gas frequently hitting sitting close to 80MPH on stretches and also creeping at 5-25MPH in traffic sections and tolls. I was not focused on saving gas but getting home as fast as I could.

Not sure that helps but based on the wisdom imparted by 1engineer I am looking forward to getting a little more out of summer gas blends.

No problem but tell me why you are using 93 instead of 87 octane like specs say. If it's what I think it is I can save you some money.
 
more mileage questions:

I put 1/8th of a 16 ounce can of SeaFoam every 700 miles in the summer. I drive about 3000 miles per month from May through September.

In the winter (October through April) I put 1/6th of a 16 oz can of Sea Foam every 700 miles. I drive about 2300 miles per month in the winter.

I drive less down hill in the winter so I have less chance of sliding through icy intersections at the bottom of hills.

In the summer I "vent" my sunroof on days where the temp is above 60 when I'm going less than 40 mpg.

My summer and winter tires are the same however I've lost .8 mm of tread depth since March. I've rotated my tires every 10,000 miles and changed my oil with Mobil 1 full synthetic. I've used a Fram extra guard filter for my summer oil changes and a Wix filter for my winter oil changes.

I wash my car more frequently in the winter than the summer- about every 3 weeks in the winter and every 5 in the summer.

I carry extra supplies in my vehicle in the winter that total to be around 15 pounds in addition to wearing thicker socks- typically a merino wool blend. I prefer smart wool over other brands.

My mileage is better in the summer by 9.844 percent.

I have a few questions that you guys might be able to help me with:

1. Who gives a shit?
2. If I buy my SeaFoam from Wal Mart is it just as good as from an auto parts store?
3. What color is my vehicle?
4. Who makes a better 9 mm FMJ round for my Glock?; Federal or Blazer?
5. What make/model/style of beer am I drinking right now?
6. When the F is my TRD Pro being delivered?

Great question and a stupid response: it's a habit. I came out of a GLK350 and my other car also requires 93 octane. I have been putting 93 into my cars for the past 5 years out of requirement. There is no scientific reasoning on my part.

I also read the thread on octane with some technical conversations that surpassed my comprehension but I also figured there is no harm in putting a higher octane. This too is just a guess on my part.

I do. Several of us, unlike you, try to help out people if we can. Seafoam eh? Must have missed that spec in the owner's manual but you know better I'm sure.

No you are fine with the higher octane. Only thing to really know about it is it is only for knock resistance nothing else.
