4runner TRD Pro

Here's the dip job I did on the rear.
Used off the shelf gray and dark gray metalizer to darken the tone of the gray. Without it it looks too much like primer.

Gobi wants 250 dollars to prewire the rack for my light bars. I'm not gonna pay that amount of money. If I don't go that route, is it still possible to run the wiring through the inside of the piping without drilling? Are there pre-drilled holes?

Are the aftermarket gas struts necessary with the ladder?

The aftermarket struts are needed, my OEM ones worked for a few months while the weather was hot but once we got below 60 degree it would not hold the hatch all the way open. They are cheap and swapping them only requires a small flat head screw driver so its worth doing.

As far the Gobi wiring, to my knowledge all Gobi's for the 4runner come prewired with 2 sets of wire running inside the lower tube front to back of the truck. I assume the extra costs if that you are buying your lights through them or have told them exactly what lights you have so they are going to put the proper connectors on, in either case $250 seems high. IF for whatever reason there was/is not wires in the rack you would have to have a hole drilled (again all Gobi's have 4 holes in them , one at each corner with grommets and the wires partially out for access) but you have to have a way to get the wires in and out....so a hole will be required.

I have been considering front and rear bumpers from shrockworks. I really do not want to have to upgrade / mess with the suspension just yet. I went with the TRD to some large extent because I figured I'd be happy with the suspension at least through the warranty. Do you guys think or know if I will have a weight problem on the stock suspension with front and rear bumpers? I do load the truck down pretty well, not terrible, and do a lot of sand driving. Most of the trucks I see on here with front and rears seem to have suspensions built up well beyond stock so I am just trying to figure this out.

are you going to slip a winch in that front bumper? if no, you're adding nearly 200lbs to the front end, if yes you're adding nearly 300lbs to the front end.

the shrockworks rear bumper is just over (if memory serves me correctly, someone help me) 300lbs with the swing out. move your spare tire from under the ass end to the swing out and you've changed the cantilever effect of the weight of the tire further out, not to mention if you decide to add jerry cans to it.

so in the end, you've added hypothetically, more than 600lbs constant to the truck and changed the center of gravity greatly.

will you need to replace your suspension? oh yeah - now in comes the argument of why the TRD Pro is an economical waste.

Look at Hefty Fabworks aluminum bumpers. Chris is a great guy and does fine work. He hooked up my Xterra back when I owned one. You'll save a ton of weight and shouldn't have any issues with changing your suspension unless you get a heavy ass winch like the Powerplant

Thanks.., was curious to see what type of oil they throw in the pros being that i bought one recently. I could just ask the dealer but they know $hit. I have no idear wtf a brorunner is :fro:

I never went 4x4'ing before, found a spot in PA today, so going to check that out with a friend who has a rubicon and been there before. It has like 4 different levels etc etc, rc4x4.org - i bet ppl on this forum been there b4.

While I would say that it has been more negative lately it's extremely mild compared to a lot of other car centric forums. A lot of the negative posts are usually in response to questions which have been asked about a 100 times or in this case about the TRDP. Still it's a great place to see other 4Runners and learn from other members. Stick around and I bet you warm up to the place. I'd also recommend taking a look at the Expedition Portal forums, there never seems to be any arguing over there.

No one cares. again see above. I like them all, I am particularly fond of 1st gen 3rd gens and 5th.

Yip. Still have my wife's first new car in a 97 Cherokee (green) with 65K original miles! Also had a Grand Cherokee a long time ago that I try to forget about.

I am on my second 4Runner and will keep buying them as long as they make them. TRD? SR5? TEP? "Funky TRD Pro"???? Pick your rig ... they are all great!
