4runner V8 - towing question

Hey all,

I need the ability to tow at least 5000 lbs from time to time, especially if I buy a camp trailer in the near future. When I purchased our 04 SR5 I asked specifically about it's towing set-up. My salesperson told me that every 4th gen. 4runner with a V8, no matter what trim package, has the same gear-ratio and the same basic tow package. For example, no factory-installed transmission cooler, brake-controller, etc, no "special" tow-package is offered in a stock vehicle. Can anybody dispute this?

If true, can anyone recommend the aftermarket necessities I should consider installing for casual towing? I don't want to put additional stress on anything if it's not designed for it!

I guess I should correct myself. There may be a trans. cooler equiped, but it's not an "optional" component. Basically, my saleperson told me that there was no special tow package offered with any equipment better-suited for towing. He said all V8 4runners have the same towing-related equipment.

According to my Toyota Canada brochure, the 2004 V8 model has both an engine oil cooler and a transmission cooler.

If you are towing a trailer, be aware that the 7 pin plug-in is about 18" to 2 ft. from the hitch (pivot point). On my first tow, a right-hand turn resulted in the unplugging of the electrical cord, so no brakes and no lights. Fortunately the brakes on the 4Runner were great and did not have a problem stopping. I have advised Toyota of the situation, but no response as yet.

Your salesman is correct. If your trailer has electric brakes, you'll need to install a brake controller. My '03 came with a small brake controller wiring harness to facilitate installation.

If you find your trailer's tongue weight causes the rear end of the 'Runner to sag, look into buying Air Lifts or something similar.

I tow a 4,000# trailer with our '03. It's a nice tow vehicle.

Thanks khaug, it's good to know that my salesperson wasn't FOS! :D

I'll need to get a brake controller soon.

Did you say you installed the air-lift? Or do you find that you need it for a 4000 lb trailer?

I have an 03 V8.

The cooler in front of the AC radiator is an engine oil cooler to the best of my knowledge and the tranny cooler runs to the normal water radiator sam unit.

Also the 03 limit was 5000 lb, and the 04 is highe I believe cause it has a bettter tow hitch. Mine had all the connections standard for trailer with electric brake, etc.

In any case there is a warning light for overheating the tranny. The diffs, etc is all standard.
