So today I was helping a friend do a brake job on his 2001 Tacoma. He recently sold his 99 4Runner but while he still owned it he bought some new brake rotors but he never got around to installing them. Since he still has them he figured he would use them on his Tacoma. Well come to find out his 2001 TRD Tacoma has smaller rotors than the rotors that were intended to be used on the 4Runner. He even cross referenced the brake rotor part number and they came up being compatible on 3rd gens and 2004 Tacomas. Does this make sense to anyone? Was there something unique about 2004 Tacomas?
I realize there are (I believe) smaller rotors for 15" wheel base model 3rd gens and then larger rotors for 265/75R16 equipped 3rd gens. I have also heard about/read a lot of gripes about the 3rd gens tendency to warp rotors but never any gripes about Tacomas warping rotors. Since the Tacoma rotors are smaller one would think the Tacoma rotors would have even more tendency to warp! I frequent other forums for Tacomas and 4Runners and have never really noticed any gripes for Tacoma rotor warping. What is the deal with that?
The size difference I seen in rotors today got me thinking about brake upgrades for a Tacoma (yes I know about the Tundra upgrade). Seeing the approximate 1" larger 4Runner rotor got me wondering if any Tacoma guys have ever done a 4Runner brake upgrade? I know this is not a Tacoma forum but there is a lot of cross trained Toyota 4x4 guys in here that might be able to chime in and share their thoughts.
