This is my first post and a newbie to the forum, I'm in the market for a 01/04 Tacoma DC 4x4, but the prices are out of control for these trucks. My question is, is the 4runner the basic same truck as far as chassis and engine. I would think the 4runner could do the same job as the truck. I've been driving 01 Tacoma xtracab 2wd now for 4 yrs, I'm looking something with more room and 4wd to go drive on the beach and spend the weekend. I've looked at the 4wd dc but the bed area is so small, I feel like i could lay the seats down in the 4r and have more room. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

If you see yourself hauling dirt, rocks and shrubs then the Taco is the way of going.
The 4runner does have some good hauling room. If you see yourself hauling 4x8 plywood, you may need to build a false floor to set the wood on due to the hatch opening size. It will accept a 4' wide sheet, but where the hatch is widest (about 1/3 of the way up), not low.

Well i've give that some thought about hauling different stuff, I'll buy a small trailer for those trips to Lowe's, and taking the trash off etc.

I would agree that if you plan on hauling dirt or anything big, the Taco is the way to go. One thing to remember too is that the 1st gen double cab and extended cab Taco's have about a foot more of length. The Runner is about the same as a standard cab with a 6 foot bed. I had an '01 extra cab Taco and while I love my Runner to death, I miss my Taco all the time. There's just no substitute for a truck.

Yes the engine, trans, etc is all the same, if you want more room and comfort get the runner and a small trailer to bring anything else youd like, or if your needs are not that great, just get a roof rack basket, or trailer hitch carrier!
Ive had a 96 tacom manual 4x4 manual ext cab and a later double cab and honestly I am wayyyy happier with my runner. Plus I only needed the box of the bed maybe 5 times a year so it really was not worth it for me, now I have a rack and basket and throw anything I want up there, the extra storage in back and a motorcycle hitch carrier and trailer so I can do adjust for what I want to bring.

My tacoma has a Leer camper shell and i hardly ever take it off. I race remote control cars a lot and that's why i bought the camper shell. When i race out of town someone will go with me and it gets a little cramped in the cab area. I do like the idea of the roof rack and trailer hitch rack. I don't haul that much stuff anyway.
When looking at used 4R's are there any year models better than others. and where do you draw the line at high miles.

Like everyone else has said it depends on what you want to do with the truck. If I had to do it all over again I would get a 4runner again same power and towing capacity but less body flex and more rear articulation and comfort ... and if you ever need to haul a little mulch or firewood you can always throw a tarp down
and '99 was arguably the best vintage unless you want the option for AWD (snowy roads which came in later years) as far as mileage goes I personally wouldnt be afraid of any numbers from my previous experience with toyotas I would just use it as an excuse to haggle the price down

+1 for a T100. They are great trucks and can take a lot of sh!t. My dad has a 95 for the farm and it's solely used on dusty/muddy roads with little maintenance having been done on it.

99 Limited would have the multimode T-case, or the ability to run full time 4wd, the option started in 99 on Limiteds.
