4Runner vs Xterra

Now if I can only jack my iPod into the standard radio (complete w/ Dead, Spread, and Phish)?

You can. In the bottom of the center console is an auxillary input jack. Just get a male to male cable and viola!

So XREAS is not designed to improve off road performance, and would hamper lifting the truck?

I wouldn't say hamper, just a waste of money at that point since you would need to replace something you paid extra for.

If you don't plan on lifting then definitely get it. If you do plan on lifting then get the SR5 and save yourself some money.

Also about the rear locker, I wouldn't worry about that until you have tested the truck as the ATRAC system is pretty remarkable in is abilities. Try it, you'll see. But if you are doing some very serious stuff then maybe but I would start with a lift and protection before a rear locker.

The problem I have had is that there have been situations when I didn't have the time to flip the switch.

They're both good, I just find the advantage in the full-time system.

The luxury vehicles don't have this because the owner "paid" for the luxury of not having to decide which mode to run in. I consider it an advantage because the handling/steering is lighter in 2WD vs 4WD. I tend to run in 4WD all the time between November 1 and April 30 (6 months always in 4WD).

Another possible advantage (note I said POSSIBLE) is that the V6 is shared with the FJC and the Tacoma which are vehicles which are more commonly modified for off-roading and performance.
