4runner with a 3rd row

Good day! I'm thinking of purchasing a 4th gen runner to fit a growing family. We've got a 3rd gen now with two kids in car seats and fitting a 3rd kid on that small bench isn't going to cut it. I'm interested in a 4th gen with the 3rd row jump seats. The wife and I looked at one last night and that 3rd row looks like it might be too small for a car seat. Does anyone have experience with car seats in the 3rd row?

We have 4 kids -- 2 boosters in the 3rd row, car seat in row 2 and one kid that doesn't need either (yay!). I don't think there would be a problem getting the seat back there its just a pain to buckle it in row 3. I keep the booster kids in the 3rd row because they can work the seatbelts on their own.

I had a 3rd gen before I got my 4th gen. We put a JC Whitney 3rd row seat in it. The Whitney price is much cheaper than little passengers and the quality seemed fine. Whitney also runs free shipping all the time and has other discounts. Here's a thread on that seat in a 3rd gen in you want to go that route instead of buying a new car. Note that for some reason, the Whitney site (last time I check) indicated that these seats wouldn't fit in a 4th gen but other sites seem to sell one seat that fits the entire line so that may be an error.

I have three kids and use the 3rd row all the time. My kids are 2, 4 and 6. I actually put the 2-year old and 5-point harness seat in the second row. I leave the large section of 60/40 split second row folded forward, leaving easy in and out access to the 3rd row. My 6 year old uses a booster and the 3rd row and my 4 year old uses a child seat with the 3rd row seatbelt.

Works great for me. other than having to jump in to hook fasten the seatbelts. I've got a 3 inch lift with 33s. :naughty:

:iagree:

Any 3rd row SUV is just not enough space for a family...unless it's the Chevy "Don't Know The Name" Extended Trunk.

Kids have a constant need and that baby stroller takes up the ENTIRE trunk.

I have the 3rd row with 4 kids and I have put the seat back there and it works just as good as the second row but it is a pita to buckle.

I picked up a bench seat for my 1977 bronco, and discovered that it would fit perfectly for use as a 3rd row seat if I needed one.
