4Runner Wont Start (Park Won't Engage)

hey guys,

so I've been having in intermittent problem with my 96 Limited. Sometimes when trying to start it will act like there is no power and will not click when trying to turn it over.

if i cycle out of park and then back into park the car will start its only happened a few times so far until yesterday when the car will not start anymore.

I believe there is a plastic sensor in the shifter that tells the car when park is enabled and i don't believe it is working. looking through the forum i have not been able to find any similar issues. I am not sure of the name of this part or assembly and need some help.

It does sound like the park/neutral position switch. Might try pulling it apart and test. Here's the wiring diagram where you could potentially route around it to see if that solves your problem temporarily:

It's kind of buried in the parts diagram on TOYOTA | Japan Parts EU, but I believe this is the part number (84727-35090). Might check with [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION]:

The truck should also start in neutral, so try that too.

The safety switch is on the transmission itself (on the passenger side, opposite end of the shaft that the shifter linkage bolts to). It might be slightly out of adjustment and you should be able to remove it and clean up the insides if that is what is wrong.

For some reason I thought it was on/near the shifter in the cab. [MENTION=139000]phattyduck[/MENTION] knows best though.

The truck should also start in neutral, so try that too.

Thank you for all the info! so i brought the piece with me to work and was able to get it all cleaned up. it was covered in grime, when i removed the PIN holding everything together i noticed one of the copper contacts was out of its groove.

after cleaning i used my Multimeter and it appears to be in working order now. I am going to put it back in when i get home and try it out

Usually when this happens it's because the shifter linkage bushings have desintigrated. They are blue and there are 2 or 4 of them depending on your truck and they cost about a dollar a piece. Replacing them really takes the slip out of the shift handle.

Beyond that, there is a small relay type of thing that attaches to the ignition switch. You can easily pull it off to bypass the shift interlock switch.
