4runners in the Caribbean?!?

Hi All,

Recently accepted a job in the Caribbean and will be moving down there for a minimum of 2 years. I sold my 4runner, was sad to see it go but I knew if it sat for 2 years, it would have been a pain in my ass when I got back (seized brakes etc). I debated on shipping it down, but with the engine being over 4000cc, import duties would have been 45%!!!! on value and shipping costs.

Just wonder if y'all have any tips for finding vehicles down there. I would love to find a 1st gen 4runner and take the roof off. The island where I'm going is small tho so I think ill have to ship one in. Is it possible to ship island to island or would I be better of shipping one from the states.

Any info would be great. About the only thing I know right now is to watch out for corrosion from the sea air.

No tips, but congrats and good luck finding one. I've seen plenty of Toyota SUVs in the Caribbean so I'm sure you can find one.

And how did you get so lucky? To get to be there 2 years, that will be awesome!

COSTA RICA??????? Nope, I'm in Philly. I did live in Peru for about 8 years (about 1600 miles south). Anyway, look for SURFs when you are down there. I've seen many surfs in the Caribbean. Can't comment on shipping as I've never done it. However, I almost went to Optometry school in Puerto Rico and friends told me to ship their SUV/car was about $2-3K.

I spent Christmas holidays in Puerto Rico. Saw a lot of 3rd gen 4runners but, only one or two with mods.

If you say what island you are going to, it might be easier for people to provide advice.

If it's a US Virgin Island, you might be able to find one in another island (US territory) and move it. I have no idea what the cost, taxes, duties might be.

If it's a British Virgin Island they might have an entire different set of laws regarding moving a vehicle there.

Oh, are you sure? hahahaha. Well I couldn't have gotten that more backwards if I tried lol. I'll be in Turks and Caicos on provo. A SURF would be nice, but I really like the idea of taking the top off and I always wanted a 1st gen. FJ40 crossed my mind too.

Turks?? I was just there last August. Saw some SURFs. I'll post pics here (let me find them). Love that island. 1st Gens? If you can find a good one state-side and ship it down, b/c I really doubt you'll find any down there. Also, b/c of the salt air/etc, expect it to oxidize fast.

I believe it was Tropical Storm Cristobal. It closed the airport for a few days. We were stranded in Atlanta for a day. Not fun (but our hotel had a great view of the runways of Hatfield ATL). Judging by the pictures (and experience), it rained A TON, lots of flooded roads. Happens when the damn storm SITS on top of the island for a few days. Very slow moving storm.

That would be nice. Now that I'm here I realize it more challenging an expensive then I thought. I see a lot of Hilux surfs and even some 4th gens but theyre crazy expensive or not for sale. Might have to settle on a POS civic or something till I can track down a decent vehicle
