Yes, 96 to 99 were very good years for the 4Runner. They usually sold over 100,000 untis to around 120,000 units. The 4Runner was the best selling Toyota SUV for years. The Highlander now claims that honor. It is pretty amazing that Toyota builds 2 SUV's about the same size and the 4Runner still holds it's own share and the Highlander sells even better. These buyers are coming from some where, probably at the exspense of other car compaines.

I think it's like 17 million cars are sold a year world wide, damn

It falls into the SUV category, we all know it's purpose: to steal the 4Runners good name, now it's a sport

Sorry EDGE, after thumbing through it(mag) I pass it up the food chain. I don't have access to past issues.

I believe ~80K '03 Runners were sold.

I think it's like 17 million cars are sold a year world wide, damn

China is probably accountable for about 10M of that total. Their auto market is akin to '50's America and the explosion of the auto.

Some what off subject, I read an article in the lastest Road and Track about China. China in now the 3rd largest country in buying cars per year. It used to be U.S., Japan and then Germany. China just past Germany, also 18% of people dying in car accidents in the whole world are from China, yet China has about 2% of the roads in the world. It turns out cars and bikes, mo-peds etc. do not mix well.

My previous SUV was a Highlander; it was a great vehicle. I guess it was more Utility than Sport.

Back on topic -- I contributed to the November figure with my '05. Nice to know I'm in an elite group of 7,607 others who bought a 4Runner in November.

Also, I recently saw some statistics for my state -- 4Runners and Highlanders were virtually tied in terms of units registered in 2003.

That was the first year the 4th gen 4Runner came out. Even in the last year the 4Runner will sell more than the Highlander for one month, but overall the Highlander is the best selling Toyota SUV.

I really liked it when the Highlander came out in 2001, within a few months the price on the 4Runner dropped. I got mine for $2,600 under invoice. Sometimes things happen you just don't expect. They already dropped the price $1000 for 2001 and then after the Highlander they couldn't give them away. ( I took it off their hands.)
