4Running Daily's Build Thread

Nice meeting you last month, your truck is pretty sick.
Your in Sedona? Where's the a holes in the pink jeeps haha

Thanks! I was impressed with how fast a solid front axle first gen was bouncing down the mountain haha

Lucky I got to play tourist with my Mom this time. So we stayed off any real trails and were able to avoid those dicks in the Jeeps.

Pics from my Utah trip

Friday we drove from ASU to Horseshoe Bend, just in time for sunset.

I wish the hike was a tad harder so that there wouldn't be 20 thousand people there.

Obviously there was no camping near Horseshoe Bend, and everything near Lake Powell was full. So we drove straight to Utah. Found a nice dirt turnout on an Indian Reservation and called it a night.

Truthfully never seen so many stars.

We were really close to the highway though haha

Saturday morning we drove into Cedar City, UT for breakfast and then hiked Kolob Canyon Creek Trail in Zion National Park.

After that we drove through Zion to Bryce Canyon.

Then it was off to Horseshoe Bend again for some night photos.

Then we drove home. 1,200 miles in a day and a half. Got home around 2 am. My Tacoma friends really wanted me to go wheeling the next day. So I woke up at 6 am to go wheeling.

I made things purposely hard because I got bored. I drove through a creek to make the tires wet and then went up this rock ledge.

ISO was 3200 and the shutter was open for around 20 seconds. Had a blast! I've put around 4000 miles on the truck in the last month. Lots of seat time haha

Looks you had a great weekend! Those pictures really want me to make a trip out west. I don't think I could handle the drive though haha

I was up in the backwoods of Tennessee this weekend and I saw the most stars I've seen in a few years because the moon was a thin crescent. (seems like every time I'm up there it's a full moon :ohwell: ) We even saw a shooting star!

She's getting there

For those that don't know, I've been battling manual transmission problems for quite some time now. Here is the history and symptoms:

169,000 miles, OEM clutch went out. Marlin Crawler clutch kit purchased. Pressure plate, throw out bearing, clutch disk. Even shift bushings replaced. And it felt great.

177,154 1st motor blew a rod out the side of the block and through the oil pan. The throw out bearing had been squealing prior, so with the motor out anyways, I had it replaced.

Around 190,000 I started having trouble going into first gear from a stop. I replaced the master and slave multiple times and they were not the issue.

201,800 My issue was diagnosed as a dead pressure plate. So the clutch was replaced again. Center force this time. New flywheel again and throw out bearing along with everything else.
This made it so I could get into first from a stop, but it still wasn't good.

Since then, my symptoms have kept getting worse and worse.

So now my current symptoms are as follows.
1st gear isn't possible from a stop. You need to downshift into first before making a stop or turn the car off, put it in first, and then turn the car on.
2nd gear loves to grind. 1st to second at anything above 3k RPM.
3rd gear seems normal
4th gear: very difficult going from 3rd to 4th at lower rpms
5th seems normal.

With the clutch depressed, I can't get into any gear from a stop. Hydraulic system is good. The clutch or transmission is at fault somehow.

So I'm starting a game plan on how to attack this and solve the problem, with a few upgrades along the way naturally.

1st decision I made, the transmission I have is trash. Not worth going through and trying to figure out whats wrong.

So I bought this. 1997 4Runner with 170k. Transmission is guaranteed to work.

Next orders will be as follows (Waiting on black friday, cyber monday sales mostly):
-URD Short throw shifter
-LCE 38 pound Flywheel
-LCE Clutch Kit
-Aisin Master Cylinder
-Aisin Slave Cylinder

That should cover all the bases. Depending on how long I wait to do the install, and how many hours I get at work over the next couple months, I might buy a Trail Gear 4.7 T-Case too, but doubtful.

You usually find many things in the apartment closets of college kids but not usually a transmission. How much does that thing weigh if you were to guess?

I have to ask why you are replacing the MC?

It's not very heavy honestly. 150 pounds maybe, 100 being the transfer case.

I figure I might as well replace everything. Not gonna leave a single component used. My current master cylinder is an AutoZone unit, so I kind of want it gone.

I hope your joking about the engine Conner and I'm guessing you live on the first floor?

Sucks to hear about the trans problems though. Keep us posted.

If all that doesn't fix the problem I would say you have a broken foot. LOL Honestly though I would encourage you to look at the lightened flywheel not the heavy flywheel. If you are going to have 4.7 gears then get the advantage of the lighter flywheel on the street. If you haven't already ordered stuff I will be in Phx on Saturday and you can drive mine with the 13lb flywheel.:zoom:
