4th Gen 4runner Engine Count

I'm NOT surprised the poll is more V8 than V6 at this current point. For me, I had to decline many, many V8's, just because I wanted the 6. It took awhile, but I found one. Why the 6? I don't tow, need 4WD mainly for snow trips to Tahoe, hauling big boxes weekly, and just because I felt (a teeny-tiny bit) guilty for driving a little Audi stuffed with a V8.

The mods to the 4R just happened to appear one day. That wasn't planned at first. Had I known, I probably would've gone V8 T4R. 285's=power & gas guzzler. At this point, I've stopped calculating MPG altogether! Still happy with the V6 though.

Assuming speed and wind didn't come into play (a big assumption), it sounds like the center diff was locked. 11.5 to 10.5 liters per 100km is 2 mpg.

I get 10.8 to 11.3 litres/100 km in my 03 SR5 V8 4WD on the hi-way, centre diff unlocked. This is in line with the window sticker showing estimated MPG/KPL.

A quick thought experiment shows why being in FT4wd instead of 2wd can't be worth anywhere near that much. Why? Because if it were, it would mean the fuel consumption difference between V6 and V8 is due almost entirely to AWD and not the engine.

I'd be surprised if the actual AWD effect is even 1/2 mpg in mixed driving.

(Original post) Feel free to input why you chose the engine you did and if you would choose it again.

We opted for the 1GR in our '08 Limited because:
o better mpg
o we tow 2,800# boat/trailer rig, but weight not enough to justify V8
o easier to sell in our geographic area (but why would we ever want to sell this gem?)
o no timing belt to change (but must change plugs every 30k miles if following factory service schedule)

Would we opt for the V8 in a new T4R if they still offered it? Nope. Happy with what we have.:trophy:

Yes, off-road terrain and it would be hard to have it locked without noticing the dash lights. I was just trying to account for the 2 mpg difference and provide evidence of why running in AWD doesn't explain it.

I looked for and got the V8. I've been driving a '93 Toyota 4x4 with the 3VZE (ie: 3.slow) for 20 years so I wanted the luxury of power on demand (I figure I've got some making up to do:laugh.

And today is my seventh day of ownership. Woot.:happy:

The option of choosing both the V8 and the V6 is not available in the poll. However we own one of each and I drive the V8 so guess which one i chose.

I love the V8 so much in my Runner.. I went out and got a second one :reddance:..

Plus we have the WRex for the "wanna save on gas" trips :lol: ...

This is exactly my issue.

I got my 05 V6 because my dad had a limited 05 V6 he bought brand new and it treated him great for 100k, I thought it was fine power-wise. I didn't like full time 4wd (doesn't bother me now) and I thought the V8 was too much.

Now I wish I had the V8. Who cares about full time 4wd? It makes it handle a little better!

I wish I had the extra power for towing more easily. I wish I had the power for running 33" tires, skids, bumpers, a winch, etc. My 1GR struggles with the stock gearing.

All in all though, I bought my V6 because it looked so beautiful in the showroom and it had 20k on it after being owned for 5 years. It was mint condition......... Then I got my 16 year old hands on it .

Three years later, it sounds like my engine is dying after what I did to the poor thing, and I wish I could get a 2UZ and swap it in. Wishful thinking
