4th gen 4Runner Secrets?

I just picked up an 03 V8 and it didn't come with an owners manual.

The vehicle currently locks whenever I shift out of Park and does not unlock when I shift into Park.

Does anyone know if this technique works on the 03? Hold down the lock/unlock switch on the drivers side door for five seconds while the ignition is in the 'On' position? Are there any other tricks to getting this to work?

It is driving me crazy having to always unlock my doors after shifting into Park.

Other than that this is one sweet SUV. I can see why there are so many happy 4Runner owners here!

That's right... I answered my own post.

This works on the 03, I just went out in the garage and did it.


You can set the following automatic
door locking and unlocking functions.

(a) Locking linked with the shift position
All the side doors and back door are
locked automatically when the automatic

Key Fob Sequence Available too

There is also a set of sequences like this you can do to program or re-program a key fob to do some locking and unlocking functions. I don't have the URL, but it's pretty easy to find on the net.

I dont think it was mentioned, but if you hit the unlock button once on the key fob it unlocks the drivers door. If you hit the button twice really quickly, it unlocks all the doors.

You can program your doors to lock either when shifting out of park or going over 13mph and you can program your doors to unlock when you shift into park or open the drivers door.

I have an `05 sr5 4X4 4runner and Didnt know the one about the headlights ...It works !! only after vehicle engine has been running and I never Noticed the one when starting that it does it by its self !! very Cool Thanks again

Sorry, that might have been a little misleading. Hope I didn't get everyone's hopes up for something cool.

But if you replace or add key fobs, you can program them yourself with a series of actions like turning the ignition on and off, pressing buttons, etc. I did that when I bought my used truck and it only came with one set of keys. Still had to pay the dealer to program a key, but the fob you can do yourself.

How about "Rain clearing mirrors"? I just came across it in the owners manual of my '04. Seems there is some type of coating on the mirrors to shed rain. It says "some models" have it but does not say which ones. Sounds pretty cool if it works.

Ah! Your trick is better than mine, it takes 400 miles to make the fuel disappear. I think the longer time frame makes the wait all the more worthwhile!

I have you both beat. It only takes me 250 miles to make a tank disappear.

I get 11-12MPG with 100% city driving. I lost about 1 MPG from the lift/ bigger tires, but the rest I'm not sure about. I only go between 2,000-2,500 RPM. I guess when I do decide to drive fun, it really sucks down the gas. Doesn't bother me one bit paying $60-$70 per week for gas. (I fill up at 1/4 not empty)

Nothing is wrong. I'm a self admitted lead foot. I live in the city and never see any highway driving. It's all stop and go for me.

1. Yesterday I turned off the 4runner and forgot to roll the windows up. With the key out of the ignition I could still roll the windows up and down for a while. As soon as I opened the door it stopped allowing it. It also stops after 30 sec or a minute.

2. Along with the easy starter I also noticed it won't allow you to try to crank the starter again by accident (making that horrible noise) if the 4runner is already running. My wife used to do that all the time in my last car and it drove me nuts.

3. Took me a while to figure out that downhill assist only works in 4-lo. When in 4-hi the downhill assist light will flash on the dash, but that means it is NOT engaged. My 4runner didn't come with a manual, so I ordered one and was happy to finally figure that out.

4. Some people, especially in review articles in magazines, really get annoyed with the beeping/buzzing when in 4-lo. If you switch to 4-lo when in neutral it won't beep at you. I also learned to give it a full 5 seconds or so to switch the gearing or you may get some awful grinding.

Hey Falls there is a simple mod you can do floating around here somewhere so the fogs stay on. All you have to do is jumper 2 wires together under the steering wheel. It bothered me as well so I did this mod and now all 6 lights are on! Dont think its "street legal" but who is going to drive past a cop with their high beams on anyways?

I don't know if there are any threads on this, i did a search but didn't come up with much. I know sometimes there are little features that can be helpful but aren't always aparent, and the manufacturer doesn't go out of their way explaining them. Like for example, in the Lexus GS if you hold the key in the driver door in the unlock position for 2 seconds it rolls down all the windows. That's just an example of one. Are there any little secrets like that for the 4R's, especially 4th gen? Thanks.

I over-closed the sunroof and it pops the back end up!- thought that was pretty cool!- don't remember reading about that in the manual and this is the first vehicle I've owned with a sunroof. It lets air in but is quieter than just opening it a little in the front. -probably less wind resistance also.

I programmed the Seat Memory for (1) my normal driving position and (2) the seat in full back, lowered position to let me out easier. That that was a good use of those buttons.
