Does anybody know, will moving the muffler to the back side of the axle effect drone at all?
I won't ever have a spare back there again and I was thinking of a louder muffler, but don't want to be droned out. No idea if it would make a difference but thought maybe moving it might help?

I don't see how the muffler positioning with respect to the exhaust system as a whole can affect the drone noise level any bit.

At first it would seem logical that the bit making the noise being further away would make it quieter. Push the muffler further rear in the system and your good. Not so fast.

The noise your hearing is resonating from the tip of the exhaust. Sure it's generated in the muffler but the vast VAST majority of the sound your hearing is coming from out of the tip.

For instance, when we speak to each other, the sound were producing is originating primarily from the neck area, but when we hear each other speak it comes from the mouth. Same difference in that the muffler and tip. Regardless of the source, it's where the sound waves meets the open space is where you will hear the noise from.

wait you're going to put the can back behind the axle? nm i routed my pipe exit over the axle and it got quieter in the cab.

moving it farther back will help with drone. I had to do that on my last truck as well. it changed the interior drone and loudness but not the exterior tone.

I would think that it would cut down on the drone, but i wonder how it would affect the sound?

Ok, so I did a ton of research into the matter yesterday after making that post. It seems drone is caused by the resonance of the pipe which is caused by the muffler. So basically the muffler vibrates and it causes the pipe to resonate and this causes drone. The sound coming out of the tailpipe has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Now, no two vehicles are the same so results vary vehicle to vehicle and also what each personal person hears and what annoys them. So you could shove a Flowmaster on a Tundra with 4.7 V8 and be fine, put that on our 4Runners with the 4.7 and it might drive you crazy.
To battle drone there are several things you can do: You can clamp/weld weights on the pipe to help disrupt the vibration pattern. If you run true duals H-pipes are the best for this as they send the resonance back and forth thus canceling it out. Moving the muffler to the back is a trick that seems to help most cars, hence why we see mufflers in the back of most cars nowadays. Another way is to make a pipe that branches off near the muffler and then is capped off. The sound waves go into it and are cancelled out. The trick is finding the length of the pipe as it depends on what RPM you are getting drone at. There is a whole formula for it but basically you are looking at a 3 foot pipe give or take for our trucks.
Lots of answers but no sure way but trial and error unfortunately, unless you want a stock muffler... :puke:

I have an issue guys, damn lights are on and I don't have any codes! My abs light is on too so I am thinking it is something to do with that, but I'm at a loss as to where to start here. Some pics:

I had the same lights come up on mine recently minus the vehicle skid light. Get ahold of a code scanner with ABS capability. I borrowed one from Advanced Auto the other day. For me it was the passenger front ABS wheel speed sensor.

Okay, have to drive past there in a couple minutes, will stop in and see if they can check.

If you disconnect the plug on the side of your master cylinder it results in the same lights. I installed a switch to do this whenever I want less intervention by traction control etc. Not sure if that helps.

Stopped at advance auto parts and had codes checked. It said all 4 sensors were bad and control module. Gave me a code of C1223 which after looking up could be something as simple as a bad gas cap (which I do and replaced just now), zero point calibration, or as major as the abs ecu which is like 2k! So... I replaced my bad gas cap, lights are off, hoping that's all it was...
neither of those are check engine lights, no codes will be shown by them.

Well the lights keep turning on and off at random as I drive. I'm wondering if some condensation or if there is a bad connection somewhere, somehow.

My warning lights (vsc, trac, abs) were intermittent at first too. Then they became constant with the addition of the brake warning and a CEL. The scanner told me all four of my sensors and the control module were malfunctioning too. I also had the C1235 code (metal sticking to pass front sensor) and the P0500 code (vehicle speed sensor). I wiped down that sensor and unhooked the battery to reset. The CEL and Brake warning are gone for now. I'm gonna get it rescanned to see what comes up.

Here's a thread I just started... if for no other reason to be comic relief on all the stupid money i've spent. Hopefully others can chime in so we can all learn. OR..... maybe i'm the village idiot.

When my wheel bearing went out last fall it had tons of crap in there. I sprayed it all out with brake cleaner, wonder if I missed some.
